Take a look at any of the reviews that are not 5-Stars. What do they have in common? They're written by people who don't like meat. They don't like prime rib. "I like my meat fried, not cooked." They refer to it as steak. "I prefer to have my steak grilled, not cooked." They're at the wrong restaurant.

Bottom line: if you like prime rib, you will not find better prime rib anywhere in the world.

If you don't eat meat but you're with a group that does, there are excellent fish and vegetarian options that are not on the menu. Just ask your server.

If your whole party doesn't eat meat, you're better off somewhere else.

I've eaten everywhere in San Fran and all over the US. This is the best restaurant in the country for anyone who likes steak. Even if you are not a fan of prime rib you will love the steak here, my wife had never had a prime rib she could eat until she tried it at HOP. Warning, prime rib anywhere else will not be the same afterwards. The sides and Yorkshire pudding bring it to another level. The service and ambiance are also good but you will come back for the food. PS - If you get the King Henry cut and finish it you can get a second cut of steak for FREE!

A San Francisco institution. Time has stood still here. My family has been coming here for years to celebrate birthdays. It's all about the beef here and HOPR definitely knows how to cook "rare." It's dark, woodsy with many separate dining rooms to give each party it's own personal private vibe. There is a "show" where your table's salad gets put together and tossed in front of you. Your prime rib get is carved in front of you. And when the huge "sides" - cream spinach or corn, Yorkshire Pudding (my favorite), baked potato stuffed to the gills with butter, sour cream, fresh bacon bits and chives (or mashed with gravy) are placed in front of you, you know you are going to be here for awhile eating! The guys usually order the complimentary prime rib slice on top of the English Cut. The rules are that you have to eat what you order first before you can order and receive the "complimentary". If have you have room after dinner, HOPR does offer great desserts. Their dark chocolate cake on a bed of sugar sweet, fresh raspberries is massive and can easily serve 4 - 6 people who need a bite or two of deliciously, moist chocolate cake to cap off their meal. HOPR will also light a candle on it if you ask. For the quality that is being served and the service you do receive, prices are actually reasonable. Sorry, this is not a place for vegetarians, vegans or people on diets. Street parking is tough. HOPR does offer paid valet parking.

I really don't understand why people are rating this restaurant so good. The meat was ok, but nothing special... The Ribs were huge, but i like them grilled, not cooked. So what you get is a salad, a huge soft slice of meat without special taste, a little spinach on the side and some mashed potatoes for an astronomical price. My girlfriend and I shared one meal, had a drink and still payed over 100$!!! Ok we were totally stuffed afterwards, but that wasn't what we were looking for. I would never go there again and can't recommend it to anyone else, espacially if you are a tourist like us (we are from Europe, Germany) and have great expectations when you are reading all these good reviews! Buy some ribs in the supermarket (beef is cheaper here than in Germany) and grill them on your own on a fire-grill if you like meat. Avoiding those overfilled overpriced restaurants is what we will do for the future!

I am not a huge steak/red meat eater, but dined here for a friends birthday and was pleasant surprised with the flavor and quality of the meat. The decor is a bit dated, but that's the charm and appeal of this old, classic steak house. While everything was fantastic (meat, sides, service, wine) my one complaint is that the drinks/bar are not current with the times. I went to order a french 75 which is on the menu at NUMEROUS restaurants and bars in the city and the bartender had no idea what it was. I was still able to get the drink I wanted, but just a note for all those craft cocktail fans, they may not know how to make your drink.

"When you want a hunk o' beef", this Polk Gulch "institution" remains a go-to for a classic American meal of prime rib "cooked to perfection" and "carved at your table", plus "all the fixin's; with its "showy" service (behold the spinning salad), "cold martinis" and big, old-fashioned booths, it's a true "throwback" deemed "worth every penny" – you can even "ask for seconds" – and while "nothing ever changes" here, nostalgics insist that's "part of the charm."
