Sushi was really nice; perfect for a late night dinner.

I did came here with a certain expectation, but it turns out, never be so sure. When one comes to a sushi place, nonetheless wherever it is located, the criticism is always on the sushi itself. A eight pieces sushi combination ends up with a horribly displayed eel sushi while the eel was falling apart into two pieces, other than than, there is a hair next to my salmon piece. Cleanness is the most important part of any dinning experience and it seems 1 or 8 have no interest in that despite its price to be a fancy sushi place. Also the fact that they didn't replace the entire plate but only the salmon piece was really get into my nerd. I file a complain but never hear back from them. totally worthless and I urge you not wasting your time on this restaurant. GBY

The whole experience was amazing. We sat down at the Sushi Bar which was an extra treat to be able to watch my friend Kazuo (one of the chefs) fillet these tasty and beautiful creations. I've had sushi before but last night was the first time I had SUSHI. After visiting to 1or8 its going to be quite difficult to each sushi anywhere else and be satisfied. The selection of fish was rare and beautifully arranged while the chefs implemented techniques I've never seen used at a Sushi restaurant before. To cap off the night I ordered the "Milk and Honey", which consisted of honey/vanilla ice-cream with dried crumbled honey comb and topped with shaved frozen milk. Needless to say I was floored. Do yourself a favor and get in there ASAP.

1 OR 8 OR ALL. This would be my top choice for a sushi restaurant in all of NY. The fish is cut divinely, and the prices are affordable for the stellar quality. I came here for my birthday and was blown away by the platter of sashimi and rolls that I ordered. My favorite sashimi is the uni(sea urchin), but I was quite taken by the mackerel here. I tried three different ones: the mackerel, horse mackerel, and the pike mackerel, which has since been replaced by kohada. Of the three types, I loved the pike mackerel. The waiter notified me that they had just received the shipment of it. Short of using my blood rubbed on worms as bait, this was as fresh as the catch could be. I'm salivating as I am writing this review, and hoping that a generous soul will take me back "just because." I don't believe I can wait another year.

"1 or 8" comes from the Japanese gambling term for "all in" -- something like all/nothing, alive/dead.

All the seafood we ate tasted like it was recently alive though now definitely dead. Super fresh, and the portions were generous. The grilled yellowtail collar, especially, exceeded our expectations both in its size and tastiness. Since it came from a larger fish we could slice large chunks of melt-in-your-mouth warm yellowtail right off the bone instead of picking out little needles.

Came here for dinner, a party of 5, after a week of Christmas binging, so the seafood options were a welcome change from our red meat gluttony.... which didn't prevent us from ordering two Tonkatsu/Panko and a Duck Two Ways.

We also ordered the $50 sushi omakase, and $50 sashimi omakase. The sashimi omakase was a good run for your money; lots of fish, with 2 slices of each so easily sharable. The sushi omakase was worthwhile as well if you like that loose rice Jiro stuff. Really, the rice was just right, never either falling apart or too dense.

Their uni was very very fresh and sweet and flavorful. We also tried some less common sashimi offerings like Japanese barracuda, and sablefish.

We appreciated the attentive service though this meant the entire wait staff was stationed around the room, watching us like hawks.

The kinako flan we had for dessert was better than the other dessert, some mochi thing with genmaicha ice cream.

Would recommend this lofty white space and its comfy white booths and large tables, over most of the crowded Manhattan Japanese restaurants any day.

Definitely want to come back for their chef's table which seats 2 at a counter right inside the magical kitchen.
