04/20/2015 11:15 amThe legacy lives on at this 1929-vintage Midtown institution, a former speakeasy and current bastion of true NY that retains its cachet with playfully elegant looks (i.e. the barroom's famed hanging decorations) and smooth staffers delivering classic American plates; the experience includes upstairs private rooms, a jackets-required policy and a big price tag, though the $56 pre-theater prix fixe is a veritable bargain. |

01/15/2015 1:54 pmStill keeping it all about burgers, and when any restaurant makes television news programs for remodeling and announcing their 'new' burger, I gotta check it out and pass judgement. I hadn't been to 21 for more than a decade and the remodel turns out to be almost flawless. It's really one of the last great 'club's' in America, masculine, rich, subtle, intriguing and almost sensual. Thank God the bar is there for plebian burger lovers like me, and to the bar I repaired to order my first 'new' 21 burger. It's really a great feeling place, dark, rich woods, lush, warm, Hemingwayesque and frivolous at the same time. Toys and artifacts hang from the ceilings and decorum, taste and restraint are mocked with civility. The burger arrived, a thick, charred fist of fine ground beef on a beautiful bun. No catsup here, but the infmaous 21 sauce. The meat tasted of the char and was perfectly cooked but perhaps not worth the almost $30.00 were it not for the sense of grandiose irrelevance. Top notch fries accompany their deluxe offering and it's a big burger which all makes for the equivalent of taking the Orient Express only across Paris rather than the whole trip. Make any sense? It's not supposed to! |

02/22/2014 3:24 amVisited during restaurant week. $38 three course menu. Nice relaxed atmosphere, dress code enforced. Interesting decor; small scale replica vehicles hanging from the ceiling. See Google Business Tour. Food mediocre. I had a Cesar salad followed by the salmon fish. My desert was a chocolate fondant which I sent back as it was dreadful, replaced with an average brûlée. Staff made my dining partner feel uncomfortable. Great wine, Sancerre $17 a glass. |

07/11/2013 3:41 pmPut your jacket on and head down to the bar that bamboozled police during Prohibition, where Humphrey Bogart took Lauren Bacall on their first date and where virtually every President of the United States since FDR has dined. The 21 Club has many icons, including the famous jockeys outside that represent famous stables from around the country. Be sure to check out the memorabilia that hangs from the ceiling and includes toys, sports paraphernalia and model airplanes donated by Howard Hughes. This is a place to go and feel a more decadent time in history. Don’t forget to check out the secret vault downstairs where the 21 Club hid all the booze when they were raided during Prohibition. |
