Slice of Italy makes the best slices within a quick walk of 13th & Penn NW.
I'm a transplanted New Yorker and a pizza fanatic, so I try a new slice whenever I get the chance. I've been eating at Slice of Italy ever since I've been working downtown; the pizza is always fresh, the staff is always fast and friendly, and I always feel I get a good value for my money.
I get their deep dish slices about as often as I get their New York-style, and both are equally good. The sauce is just tangy enough, there's plenty of cheese, and I don't feel like the crust overwhelms the cheese and sauce.
Toppings are piled on. I love their pepperoni mushroom slice, plenty of fresh mushrooms. Their meat lovers' slice is piled high with pepperoni, sausage, and bacon--it's a bit heavy, as is to be expected, but still tasty.
To be honest, I've never even tried their hot buffet. The entrees always look tasty, but I go there for the pizza.
I give this place four stars and not five mainly because I'm a pizza snob, and there are very few places in the DC area I'd be willing to rate as 5 stars for pizza. There's just something about how they make pizza in NYC and the surrounding areas, it's tough for even the best places down here to compare.
