04/20/2015 3:45 pmFrom A to Z, Jean-Georges Vongerichten's happening Flatiron charmer in ABC Carpet & Home gets it right, showcasing tantalizing, farm-to-fork American cooking composed from top-notch seasonal and organic ingredients; given the genial team manning the chic, minimalist setting, it's a huge hit with fashionable folks and still a tough reservation. |

11/23/2014 4:35 pmI find it almost impossible to hate ABC Kitchen; although, if there was a reason, it would only be because it's so hard to get a table at this well-received restaurant. Under the oversight of JG Vongerichten, this Union Square restaurant has maintained a focus on using organic and locally-sourced ingredients without sacrificing the end product on the plate. It's a great option for brunch, which is when guests can order the Eggs Benedict with Flying Pigs Farm Ham. Dinner also gives guests the option to order the excellent Whole Wheat Mushroom Pizza. The crust is substantial and crisp, and the melted Parmesan cheese on top is complemented with mushrooms, oregano, and a barely-cooked farm egg in the center. The Akaushi Cheeseburger is a rather pricey item at $24, but is one of the more enjoyable burgers that I've found in the city. The burger is served on a lightly toasted Eli's bun, topped with grated Cato Corner Bloomsday cheese, and served with a fragrant and creamy arugula and basil mayo... but that's not all. The finishing touch is a spread of pickled jalapeno peppers placed on the other half of the bun, which add the perfect amount of spice to each bite. I'd definitely recommend making reservations in advance, as their popularity has been justifiably sustained over time. |

11/05/2014 12:29 amABC kitchen by Jean Georges is solid, but underwhelming. I love that he uses all organic ingredients for this restaurant (even the furniture is made from recycled materials!) but the preparation was not that impressive. Our crab toast appetizer was the best part of the meal, albeit extremely oily. I got a fish entree for the main and it was cooked well, but the flavor just tasted like salt. It sat atop a bed of sauteed spinach, not dissimilar to something I cook for myself. |
