It's all about the "legendary" "drip-down-your-hand" Italian beef sandwiches "smothered" with hot and sweet peppers and dipped in "meat juices" ("for god's sake have them dunk it") at this homegrown fast food chain where the fries are pretty "great too"; yes, the "no-frills" surrounds are a bit "lackluster" (many "prefer" the Taylor St. original), but when you want to "indulge", it's a "Chicago classic."

Classic italian beef. One of my favorite in chicago. Gotta get the beef with spicy peppers.

Now that's a beef sandwich, the line was out the door when I went ( lunch time ) but it moved relatively fast, the sandwich was amazing, dipped in the gravy. Only complaint is there was not much space to sit but I believe they're still in the original spot and there is parking.

Not from the area and Al's was close to the hotel I was staying at. Already tried Portillo's, and decided to go to Al's just for the hell of it, and I am glad that I did. I got the legend, dipped with both sweet and spicy peppers, killed Portillo's.

Had a beef sandwich with sweet peppers. It was on the dryside, but still tasty. I should have ordered it with the giardiniera, it might have made it more flavourful.

I think I will try a combo next time, I am willing to give it another try.

Had to check out. I love small local dives, which this location is. Italian dipped sweet and hot was good. The guy at the register was trashed. He actually fell asleep during the transaction. We had to get the guys making the sandwiches to wake him to finish our order. Also tried the tamale. It was in a plastic wrapper heated in the microwave much like a frozen burrito you would find in a grocery store. It was inedible. At least take it out of the wrapper. Never going to order that again. Fries were very soggy. Which is good. Very old school. I'm glad I experienced the place just to cross it off of places I have been. If not for the ambiance and the fine service I would probably have given two stars. The tamale brought it down a star or two also.
