Outwardly a "hole-in-the-wall" bar, this "cheap and cheerful" Back Bay haunt is a "fantastic find" for "feel-good Italian" fare and "generous" pours; it can be "a little difficult to get a table", as it's filled with an "interesting crowd", "particularly during the late hours."

Great atmosphere and food, terrible service. Had an incredibly rude waiter that just wanted to know what we wanted didn't offer any suggestions and never cared to ask how our meals were or if we needed anything else with our meals. Very disappointing!

Anchovies...You either like them or you don't.
My dining partner liked the food...but I didn't.

SERVICE: Service was fast & friendly.
DRINKS: Drinks were modest & moderately priced.
FOOD: Food was where they lost me.

My fettucini was OVERCOOKED AND MUSHY.
My meatballs were baked, which made them too soft too.
(I much prefer pan fried to baked meatballs for this reason.)

Their lasagna had NO RED SAUCE, MUSHY PASTA,
and was plated in a POOL OF OIL and melted cheese.
This is NOT a traditional Italian lasagna, and, for this reason,
their menu should clearly state this before you order it.
It might be a Northern recipe based on sharp cheese & oil?

Anchovies looks like a normal dive bar but in fact has a great, traditional menu behind it. Get the truffle fries which sound really simple but the the right amount of truffle to give the fries a great flavor. We also got the potato gnocchi which was strangely delicious because it was just a normal marinara sauce yet the gnocchi was well-cooked and the whole dish was terrific. The chicken marinara wasn't too shabby either. Even better, the cost in the end (along with a wine bottle) was just $60. Great value.
