An evening of fine dining that places Portland on the map with Paris, Florence, and New York. With a party of 5 selecting from their 4-course new years eve menu, the winners of the night were the sirloin, the lobster with truffles, and the sushi grade tuna. At the end of the night, the chocolate torte was the best I've ever tasted. My only critique was a slightly noisy dining room. We were seated at a table meant for 6 in the center of the room, so we surely had the worst of it.

Amazing experience. We asked for a table at 7pm but could only get an 830. Forty-five minutes later Adrian, the maitre d', called back and let us know he could seat us at eight. We called back and said we'd stick with 830pm. Then we changed our minds and asked for the 8pm slot. Adrian hooked us up and got us a table for eight. He was really patient with us changing our minds - which we appreciated - and then got us a great table when we sat down at eight.

The food was incredible. I had never eaten food that good in my entire life. It took me forty-five minutes to eat my filet mignon simply because it was so rich and delicious. The veggies were fresh and full of flavor, too. The waitstaff was very friendly and courteous and helped my friend and I not feel intimidated by the quality of the restaurant.

Amazing restaurant, highly recommend, will certainly return next time I'm in Portland.

We dined at the backbay last night for valentines day, LOVELY! I know its a crazy night for the service industry but you could not tell from the very professional staff:)Our server was very knowledgeable and the greeting upon entering and overall table service from bussers etc. was perfect. We used to go out a lot but recently had a baby so this was an exciting night for us and they made us feel very special. I spent the last 20 years in the service industry and kudos to the backbay! The food was so amazing and perfectly seasoned, I had the beef tartar and the tuna. All I can say is PERFECT! Thank you backbay! A very greatful mommy:)) please excuse typos am holding baby

So dissapointed. Service was slow and not in the good way. The ventilation system was a joke the smell reminded me of a greasy diner (not a good one). The apps were ok but the dinner had issues, at least use real potatoes for mashed, steak had no flavor and tasted like it had been sitting around for a while, food was barely warm, and we actually had to ask for salt and pepper. The manager asked us if our meal was cooked to our liking and it was only our apps. He never stopped back by. The sad part is we were there for an hour 30min and at most there were only 13 peeps. We are from Naples and regs at Fore Street but had a GC to BBG...BBG doesnt come close, we wont go back, since we drive 50 mins we prefer a good meal.

The food was great, it is pricey though. The atmosphere was a little dated but thats not a big deal. The service was great.
