After many visits to Barlow’s with mixed results, I felt a need to provide this warning: BEWARE THE BALD, MUSTACHED GUY.

I am a Southie resident, and invited/brought 8 patrons, including myself, to Barlow’s on a cold, rainy Thanksgiving Eve. After screwing up our food order (bringing a pizza with jalapeno and pineapple instead of butternut squash and arugula), our bartender then proceeded to consistently ignore us for additional food/drink/and later check requests from members of our party. This was entirely unacceptable given the level of business (or lack thereof…) on this night.

Insult to injury was charging us for an extra drink—my boyfriend and I split one, so an even number on our tab was too convenient (and inaccurate)—and then being accused of lying/being too drunk to remember what I ordered when I asked the bartender to take $6 off of a $92 bill…this is HORRIBLE, SHORT-SIGHTED CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for years and would typically be the first to excuse/defend poor service (an off day, bad kitchen staff, whatever the case might be…), but in this case there is ABSOLUTELY NO DEFENSE OR EXCUSE FOR THE POOR TREATMENT THE BALD, MUSTACHED GUY AT BARLOW’S PROVIDED. As I noted to him before and after my inexcusable treatment, I will never return to this establishment again, and recommend Amrhein’s, Lincoln, Williams Tavern, or any other establishment to people looking for a drink, food, and especially good service in the area.

I’m sad to abandon Barlow’s since their food and service (OTHER THAN THE BALD, MUSTACHED GUY) are generally excellent and consistent, but wanted to put this review out there for the restaurant owners and other potential patrons.

Awesome spot to grab a few drinks after work or on the weekend. Fantastic atmosphere and always boasts a lively crowd. Great waiters and bar tenders. Food is decent but you're going here for the scene, drinks and live bands...not for the best food in Boston. Their outdoor patio is the perfect balance of upscale and relaxed.

Food:

Barlow's is a great place to grab a beer after work. They have a good selection of beers and some great appetizers. I'd have to say the nachos make my top 5 list of best nachos in and around Boston. Also, no matter where you stand or sit in the bar, you can see one of the TVs that's playing the latest sporting event. If the weather is nice enough, go out and enjoy the patio. Barlow's is definitely worth a travel into South Boston.
