Food:

We went for an early dinner and were very disappointed. We ordered an appetizer of ricotta bruschetta. The flavor was good but it was served with only 3 wafers.
We then had Cesar salads which had fancy presentation but lacked flavor and we learned when our bill came they were an additional charge.
For dinner I was very disappointed with my dish. I'd never ordered it before so I asked the waiter what it was like (it was a Italian Ham in rolled pasta) and when I took my first bite it had an odd sour flavor, similar to green olives. I only ate a few bites.
My husband had penne bolognese and it was dry and the meat was very flavorful but the marinara had very little flavor so it was unbalanced.
We ordered our two year old the Alfredo and it was by far the best dish. It had a unique smoky flavor.
The service was terrible. We were one of 2 tables and the milk we ordered for our son didn't come until after our entrees even though we asked two different waiters a total of 3 times to bring it.

The food was disgusting, but the service was good. I had the antipasto and it was the worst I have ever had, almost brought it back up. But the service was pretty good. And the cost compared to the portions was horrible, I could understand if it was high quality food, but it wasn't.

After 5 visits to the revamped Ballagio, I won't return (I really wanted to support a neighborhood eatery). But, the food is uneven. 2 of my 5 orders were quite good, 3 of them below average. But the biggest problem is they can't seem to decide what they want to be; a bar-resturant- or live music lounge. As a result the noise is deafening! Really HORRIBLE! I'm tired of having to SHOUT (not kidding) at my companions and yell at the nice waiters because I can't hear what they're saying to me. This is not a gaslamp singles community. They made a huge mistake by intentionally eliminating any sound proofing in the remodel. Too bad, my neighbors and I would have kept going in spite of the uneven food (that can be fixed) but the noise factor makes it really an unpleasant way to try to have a good meal with friends.
