Growing up in a very czech community...doesn't even factor in to my review. Speaking for food in general, my duck was so dried out that there were chunks of meat that I couldn't even chew (beyond jerkey). The same happened to me a couple of years ago when I stopped in, but I was giving them a second chance. The liver dumpling soup is a very poor version of liver dumpling soup. The place also smells like a dusty nursing home. You fooled me twice, but never again.

Read only the google reviews and decided to eat there after a trip to the zoo. The decor was unique and reminded me of some of the German restaurants I ate in as a child. Was a little put off by really old stlye water glasses. But I thought it was just part of the decor. I saw schnitzel on the menu and was excited.

Rye bread was placed on the table with butter and all entrées came with soup. My wife had the beer in a big glass, which even upped the excitement. She ordered the Polish sausage, thinking we were in for a gastronomic delight. Out came the soup which was just some broth with noodles. Obviously it was canned broth with noodles that had been soaking for a long time.

Then came the schnitzel. It was four chunks of supposed veal that had been stewed for hours topped with a super sweet red sauce that tastes like ketchup and thee pieces of canned mushrooms. Menu said it was a wine sauce, but had no flavor of wine. Accompanied by a scoop of box mash potatoes and canned sauerkraut that had been sweetened. Those too seemed to have been cooked hours ago.

Then I look at the Polish sausage. Two links that were microwaved and were store bought. I have never returned a plate of food but this food was inedible. The waiter took my dish and offered the veal with different gravy. A minute later he returned with three more chunks of meat and two different gravies that tasted like they came out of an envelope. This food was not cooked to order. Oh yeah, these dishes were priced at over 15 dollars. For boxed mash potatoes!

We had waited abour 15 minutes for our food, but now I realize that they had to defrost the chicken cutlet I had ordered for my daughter.

I paid my $60 dollar check, as the owner was belittling my palate. She stated that this seasoning was unique and I was just not used to it. Little did she know I grew up in Europe with military veteran dad who was stationed in Germany. I know schnitzel.

Good thing I did not threaten not to pay, because after reading other reviews they will call the cops. All the other reviews that had 5 stars seem to be from the restaurant, as they all seem to sell the beer and thier unique flavors.

Go for the beer and bread but stay away from the food.

Chicken fried steak, dumplings were great. The sauerkraut was unique, very flavorful, and I thought it more suited for the Polish sausage, so I'd switch that up next time. Order extra gravy, sure why not. Breaded Veal cutlet was top notch. Nothing is oversalted. You need to order the dumplings. These things are neat, and seem to go great with everything. The apricot kolaczki for dessert was both inexpensive, and delightful. Hey, I ordered a beer in a frozen mug, and it stayed cold for over 45 minutes as I sipped it throughout the meal, and conversation, so that's a plus for any beer lovers. I loved the original tables and booths from the 20's and 30's. I think that quaintness is another reason to go, although some reviews seem to gawk at the dated interior, I think it's actually the reverse. I guess sometimes we can't appreciate what is around us. Clean, tasty, consistent food. Everything comes to the table hot, and within a few minutes of ordering. Staff checks back often. Been going since the 70's, but have been away for 15 years, and yes, it's good to be home. There is no place like Nebraska, or the Bohemian Cafe. Oh, and they don't re-serve the bread, so you take it with you. I think that is a bit refreshing as well.

Friendly service, atmosphere is very "Bohemian" inspired with a lot of authentic stuff hanging around. The broiled meat is excellent, and the sauerkraut is outstanding. Get the dumpling as your side with your entree. Worth a stop in for sure. Best Czech food I've ever had outside of Europe.
