They call themselves a diner, but really it is more of a bar. It's dark and not very clean. I felt bad about bringing my kids there and you could tell from the way that the waitress behaved that they probably didn't have a lot of children come in.

I found out about this place in the Hamburger America book by George Motz. I have enjoyed trying his selections in the past. This was the first that I was ever disappointed in. You could tell that the burger was homemade, but it was dry and just not very good. I'm not sure if there are new owners or if they've just let the quality decline over the years... The walls have signs talking about the diner's long history, but it seems to me that they are letting that reputation go to waste.

Been going to Brown's since 1965. Back then it was just the bar section in the front, with a patio and picnic table out back. Dining room added later. Cold beer, great cheeseburgers, pork barbecue and fries. When I lived in Nashville '65-'68 and '86-'01, it was my hangout. Bartender Gordie is a huge hockey fan from Detroit area. Eclectic bar crowd from laborers to lawyers to professors to musicians.

It's a great little dive with great food. Don't expect a big menu just the basics but it's all great, a hamburger like mom would make. The staff and folks hanging out are a good friendly bunch and you never know who's going to be playing.
