So far I've just had the chicken but I'll be back for more. Nice little place. Need bigger helpings of slaw and potato salad! EDIT: After several visits I can say that it takes FOREVER to get your order. Still good, but order ahead,

I keep wanting to like this place. It's in my neighborhood. Other people write good reviews. So I keep going back thinking that maybe I've just been unlucky there before. But every time they disappoint.

The first time was a couple years ago for a rib order that I called in. On the phone they gave me a time to pick up. I arrived at that time. My order was finally ready to take out 60 minutes after that. The ribs were meh, pretty fatty, definitely not in the same class as any of a number of other good rib places in town. And the wings had a really funny (not in a good way) odor.

The second time, about a year later, was a little better, in that they weren't incredibly late, just about 20 minutes longer than they said. The ribs were still meh, about the same as the first time. After this trip I decided that the people giving their barbecue good ratings must have disabled taste buds or have never actually had good ribs. I'm done ordering C&G's barbecue for sure.

So today I'm out on my bike at lunch time and notice that their awning banner says they have coney island hot dogs. I ask myself, "What can go wrong with a coney dog?" So I go in and order one. The women at the register doesn't seem to know how to make change, but I help her with that. There are no customers in the store and there don't appear to be any other orders being prepared. But it still took the women (the same one that rang it up) almost 15 minutes to get me my coney dog. The dog was just a store bought hot dog steamed on a mushy store bought bun. And the "famous" C&G chili on the dog was the consistency of bad gruel and nearly flavorless.

For what it's worth, it is now August 24th and the city of Minneapolis's ban on styrofoam takeout containers was April 22nd. C&G is sill using them...

So I've made this year's annual visit to the neighborhood barbecue and it came up wanting again. I don't get it that anybody reviews this place any better than three stars. About a star and a half is what they offer, on a consistent basis. Wish I could be kinder.
