The food's a match for the "trendy vibe" at these "fashionable" French-Moroccan lairs where "affordable" bites like "fabulous" couscous are dispensed by a "gorgeous" staff; the NoLita original is on the "tight" side, but the more spread-out Jane Hotel spin-off is just as "energetic."

I came to Gitane with four friends for a late brunch/lunch. We waited like 10 mns at the bar for our table to free up. The cafe is very cute, its got this sort of rustic cafe vibe from the French occupation of Morocco. Lots of things to look at and keep you busy while you wait. It's naturally lit since it's on the first floor of the riverside.

To drink, I ordered the cucumber juice, and it was delicious! We shared the Goat Cheese Balls and the Dukkah. The cheese balls were quite spicy but very flavorful. The Dukkah was very hard to eat properly: it's a small bowl filled to the top with crushed nuts and spices. Nevertheless, it was very good.

We all had the Couscous. I was great! The plate was beautiful, and you get a huge serving on hummus on top. As a hummus expert, I can tell you that this is one of the best hummus I've had in New York. If you add the hot sauce, it just makes everything better! Really, really good! The spices are just right, the salt is very light, almost inexistent.

All and all, great place!

Nice decor, although not really coherent... Buddha?! In a Moroccan-French place? I don't get it...
Good for coffee or tea and pastry. (Not all pastry actually, the friand was ok) The food isn't good.. The waffles were not even edible! The baked eggs were tasteless even with the sauce.
Too bad.. Could have been a nice café.

This place makes me feel like I was transported to another country. It is a beautiful space and if you are lucky enough to get a seat by the window, you can actually see the Hudson. They have the BEST avocado toast that is just a little spicy and on thick country-style bread. For dinner, they have great cous-cous and tasty cocktails.

One of my favourite places to eat in NYC. A lovely relaxed atmosphere and friendly, but not overbearing waiting staff. I would highly recommend getting a few plates to share, at least of lunch anyway. The avocado toast is simply delicious and the goats' cheese packs a punch, brilliant. I love the Jane Street cafe, tucked away in the Jane Hotel.
