A nice, slightly quirky place for a reasonable lunch or dinner. Sit outside on a nice day.

Chez Lulu is seriously one of my favorite restaurants in Birmingham. It's the perfect little french cafe -- incredibly charming with great seating inside and out. It's best for small groups, but for big groups or parties they'll rent out the back room (or a table in the back room), and that's also lovely.

I most often visit for a light lunch -- their sandwiches, soups and salads are made with fresh ingredients and have a wonderful balance of flavors, and it's a really nice place for a quick lunch (or a lingering lunch with a glass or two of wine). Their pastries are made next door at the stellar Continental Bakery, and they have a full espresso bar as well.

The brunch here is also fantastic. I love their crepes and their grits are so good that my sister and I sometimes order them for "dessert" as well as with the meal.

Chez Lulu is just charming and fantastic! Try it!

One of the best places to take out of town visitors to change their preconceived notions about Birmingham. Chez Lulu is a little jewel-box of a cafe.
Try the pizzas at night especially with the crust made with spent grains from one of Birmingham's local breweries!
Socca is also amazing. I've never encountered a single other restaurant in North America that serves these crepes made with chickpea flour, olive oil and cracked black pepper. Pair it with a glass of rose' and you'll swear you're in Nice.
The garlic soup is the perfect antidote to vampires and winter colds.
Don't leave without a chocolate espresso pot de creme and a creme brulee. It's like ebony and ivory side by side in perfect harmony.
Bon apetit!
