Crystal Garden, Riverhead, New York Restaurant Details

Food:

Love this place i have gone there for years w/ the family for special occasions. The dinners are best because u get the crab legs and ribs and maybe a few other things they dont normally put out for lunch. The only thing is u cant go real late otherwise u basically just get the cold/dried out left overs and they dont replenish if its getting late of course. U can even get a "take out" container which i have done many times as well. If u get shrimp though and really fill up the box like i always do its likely gonna cost u $10 or more so dont be shocked lol. They dont seem to give knives for sum reason OR extra napkins and the waiters just seem to hang out and BS w/ each other more then anything but I'm not there to BS w/ them so...

I review alot of places and you can see under my name. I have never been treated like an animal before until coming to this establishment. Let me start from the top. The owner didn't even say hello when we walked not even a smile - just a price came from his lips and then pointed to the dinning area. I asked if we sit anywhere to which the response was wait for him-pointing to the waiter; whom also did not utter a word besides "what to drink?" no reply to our "thank you." He threw the silverware onto the table without any placement whatsoever. As soon as we finished eating our first plates the waiter brought us a small plate that read thank you with 3 fortune cookies. Not a single plate was cleaned from our table during the hour we were there. There was even a "clean" plate with fortune cookie wrappers when i turned it around. At one point I asked for refills for my family of 3 to which the waiter brought back 1 refill -just over half full - and they do walk around, but ignore you when you ask for something. Only a simple bye on the way out. This is the first time in my life I have met extremely rude Asian people-especially at a dining establishment. Please stay away from this terrible restaurant. I hate to admit but I agree with the first review posting even though I originally decided to visit the place disregarding it. I'm much better off ordering $50 worth of food from a good Chinese take-out. Lesson learned!

. The waiters here are very rude, and I can't understand their english. Food here is pretty expensive, and charges extra for sushi, they used to charge you for it. They was almost going out of business so they stop. which the other buffet don't. Will never come back.

Food:

Excellent sushi. One of the best sushi places I've gone too at a Chinese Buffet. But it's true, sometimes Crystal Garden's sushi rice is a bit warm. They sometimes run out of cooled sushi rice, yet sushi always tastes much better when the sushi rice is slightly cool. I'm not sure why that it is. Cooled rice just tastes better. Better texture. Better taste.

Crystal Garden's Chinese food is also pretty good with some items tastier than others. Lately, the fried boneless fish is better than ever. Quite exceptional. Light and flaky. But even when they slightly overcook the fish (they haven't done this in a while; maybe they have a new chef / cook?) -- the fish is still pretty good. They also have really exceptional Thai Chicken (very tasty; excellent texture). Excellent wonton soup too. Very good egg rolls. Many other tasty items.

I give Crystal Gardens a 4.7 rating out of 5; however, I'd give them 5 Stars if they were just a bit more consistent. Nevertheless, a 4.7 out of 5 Stars is still very good for a buffet style Chinese restaurant.

Good food. Exceptional sushi. Another reviewer said the sushi costs extra. Not true. It's included in the buffet price. Not sure what he's talking about. Furthermore, most Chinese buffets have mediocre sushi, but Crystal Garden is excellent. I give their sushi a 9 out of 10 rating. They also make fancy sushi rolls; my wife likes them. My favorites are tuna & avocado, salmon & avocado, and California rolls. Just make sure you ask Kelvin (the manager) if the sushi rice is cool. Sometimes Crystal Gardens is so busy that they run low on cooled sushi rice. Warm sushi rice is OK, but definitely not as good as cool sushi rice (better texture; better taste). Crystal Garden's Chinese food is also good with some items better than others. Highly recommended.
