"Pub meets Mad Men" at this "upscale", "smoke-free" Uptown lounge in an "out-of-the-way" "old firehouse" done up "dark and cool" and "beautifully decorated"; "innovative" concoctions that "make your taste buds tingle" are "painstakingly handmade" by "mixologists, not bartenders", and if some find the process a bit "pretentious" (especially when it leads to "slow service"), connoisseurs contend it boasts the city's "best cocktail scene."

Craft cocktails... what's not to love?

Well, there can be quite a lot actually. I wanted to like this place. The problems were many, but first, let's talk about what it has going for it:

The good:

The drinks are great. The pricing is in line with what to expect with trendy craft cocktails. With a date, you can probably cross the century mark without trying. The cocktails themselves are creative and feel new.

The bad:

While the decoration and style of the bar is very much aligned with the cocktails (hip/trendy), they didn't think seating out very well. There are some parts where the seating is more for the look rather than the function. While packed bars can be good or bad for some people, the noise level was just too high. When I can barely see or hear the person at my small table, then that's my sign that the place just wasn't well thought out. In other words, don't go here if you are on a first date or want to catch up with old friends.

The other big negative are the servers. The bar was full, but by no means packed or what I would say is a busy bar. Yet, the server took 30 minutes to get our order after taking about 10 minutes to get our menu. After the drinks made it over 15 minutes later (actually faster than expected), the server took too long for us to even consider ordering again. About 45 minutes passed between getting our drinks and the server checking on us again despite numerous attempts to get her attention. She obviously couldn't hear us even though she was 4 feet away.

Go here for the drinks and only that.

We arrived on a Saturday night at happy hour with a small group. All of the cocktails we tried were outstanding and they even have a daily punch which was equally outstanding. Unfortunately, I cannot remember all of the ingredients in the daily punch but it did have champagne and fresh raspberries. The bar itself is warm and inviting and not pretentious. Our group sat on the corner of the bar where we were introduced to Ryan who is one of the most adventurous and innovative bartenders we’ve ever met. He took the time to explain each of the unique ingredients he was using to craft our cocktails. His timing was impeccable-- when you were down to the last few sips of your drink he would arrive and start the process of creating another fabulous drink. After we tried most of the drinks on the menu Ryan started to resurrect some of the previous cocktails crafted at Cure. Needless to say, they were perfect. Since this establishment was our pre-dinner cocktail stop we only had a few of their small plates. The duck liver pate was smooth, creamy and flavorful. The other outstanding dish was the home made pimento cheese and hand cut potato chips. I would definitely recommend Cure if you’re looking for a unique craft cocktail bar and have the time to explore New Orleans outside the French quarter.

This is not only one of the best craft cocktail bars in the US but it’s started the whole scene down here in New Orleans. Cure is also located on Freret Street in uptown New Orleans and was one of the first new businesses to anchor what is now a food and small business renaissance on Freret St. They always have a ton of new drink specials and the atmosphere and space is comfortable yet super sleek and modern. They also have a pretty extensive bar menu with food and I know have changed chefs recently but I haven’t eaten there in awhile usually because it’s a post dinner spot for drinks and fun.

My main reason for coming here was that the bar is listed as the 43rd best bar in the world. There are surprisingly few outside of New York and London, mostly in major world cities (San Francisco, Moscow). When I arrived in the dim and sparsely decorated bar, then, I was surprised to see the place nearly empty. Granted, it was cold and stormy by New Orleans standards, so perhaps people were just hunkering down. Still, I expected a bit more of a crowd. Only two bartenders were working that night, and even with perhaps a dozen patrons, they seemed a bit overwhelmed.

My companion and I were both fans of rye, so I got a Sazerac and she an old fashioned. Both were fine, though perhaps my expectations were unreasonably high because of its place on a list on the Internet. We moved on to other things that were supposedly specialties of the house. While all very nice, none were so amazing as to change my view of what a cocktail should be.

A fine experience, though perhaps not worth the special trip.
