Horrible experience! I ordered the chicken quesadilla supreme but when it came it was the one with beans and rice not sour cream I told the waiter and he said no you ordered this one. So I asked could I at least have some sour cream then and he said it will be an additional .50. Ok whatever so I ordered a margarita and it tasted awful, it was like a cheap lime drink with some tequila added when I told the waiter about it he said sorry they don't offer refunds on alcohol drinks even tho I had only taken one sip. I couldn't even drink it even tho I had to pay for it. Also the food was not that great my friend ordered the enchiladas which has a brown sauce over them and tastes bad. They bring you a big basket of chips and a really small bowl of salsa and never offered to refill our salsaI even tho we had plenty of chips left. I would not recommend eating here!

Admittedly, I've only been to one Mexican restaurant in Montgomery, but it's because the other options just don't look that good. El Cantaro at least has Facebook pictures of them standing around the al pastor spit, which is more trouble than I suspect many Mexican places go to for their version of the dish. Really, this Taqueria is like many others where they have three or four menu pages of generic "Mexican" food like fajitas, quesadillas, and enchiladas, all made with your choice of generic beef or generic chicken. It's meant to throw you off and distract you from the real treasure they have to offer. If you look to the back pages of the menu you find the tortas, the tacos, the chalupas, huaraches, and the pelliscadas. These are what you want.

El Cantaro further tries to trip you up, asking you if you want them in a hard shell, or "authentic style". You want them authentic style. Nothing but a homemade tortilla and your choice of meat, plus a relish tray of onions, cilantro, and red and green salsas to decorate as you wish. You don't need rice. You don't need beans.

As for the meats themselves, the carnitas and lengua were a little bland, and the al pastor - while plenty tender - could have used a bit of crisping on the grill. What I really liked was the steak/chorizo combination of the campechanos, providing the tender beefy-ness oft the steak and the salty pork sausage.

For as much as they make their own tortillas, they don't provide them for the chips and salsa, which was disappointing.

Really, this was not the best Mexican food I've had, but given Montgomery's other options like La Zona Rosa and Ixtapa, this is leaps and bounds better tasting and more authentic.
