Atmosphere is always interesting. I would come here often with my family about 7 years ago.. and it was the coolest place with the best food. Unfortunately, the quality has gone down a lot, service was slow and my gf and I were the only ones ordering at the time. There was a nasty odor throughout the place, bathroom was filthy, every table was sticky and greasy, and food made me sick. Bottom line: great place to look at, not a great place to eat. Overpriced, greasy, and salty. Combine all that with the nasty smell and you have a recipe for disaster.

I love this restaurant. It's a four-story building, and there's tables on every floor. The walls (and sometimes the ceiling) are filled with interesting, crazy things to look at, and it has a real "vibe". And the food is just as entertaining, with like a gazillion variations on all the classics like sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, hamburgers, and french fries. (For example, they even a hamburger that's covered with peanut butter.) And there's one great new story in the restaurant's history. Fanny Ann's once asked a man with a growling pit bull to take his food "to go". When it turned out the man was a former police officer (and the dog was a service dog), the owner sat down with him a few days later, and "I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome," the police officer wrote on his Facebook page. (The police officer even added that while the restaurant was apologizing to him, he was apologizing to the restaurant!) Yay, Fanny Ann's!

As a retired police officer, a combat vet and a PTSD suffer myself and a former resident of Sacramento who loved Fanny Anns (I went drinking there on my 21st birthday and many many times after). I like to go to Fanny Anns when ever I am back in Old Sac but I never will again. Yesterday they kicked out a Citrus Heights Disabled Police Officer who was injured in the line of duty during a shoot out in Roseville in 2013 that also left 4 other officers shot. Officer Rangel was there to eat lunch with his friend and also with his service dog. The dog was wearing a service dog collar. The manager said his dog was not a service dog because of its breed and kicked him out in clear violation of the Americans with Disability Act.

OK. This is just one of those places you have to experience at least once and you are either going to love it or hate it. Crammed into an old historic building, the bar takes up most of the space on the ground floor and that is where you get your beverages -- even if you only want a soda to go with your burger. Toward the back of the ground floor is the window to the kitchen where you order the food you want. They have lots of burgers and similar options, but are known for their Jiff Burger, covered in peanut butter. They will call you back to the window when your food is ready. Unless you are going to sit at the bar, you are going to venture down to the basement or to one of the upper levels to grab a table. The decor is unique and has lots of character. My favorite thing to do is to sit on the second level with a view of the doors to the restrooms that have been signed in such a way so as to confuse people. Great people watching! Just a fun spot in old town to grab a bite to eat.
