My wife and I first experienced the French Cafe in the early 70's. The atmosphere, service and cuisine was exquisite. We always remarked that it was one of the most memorable dining experiences of our life. Twenty some years later, we had an occasion to be in Omaha so of course we went to the French Cafe not really expecting it to be as good as we remembered. I'm happy to report that they have not lost their touch. Ambiance, service and cuisine is still top notch. I only wish I had more occasions to be in Omaha. The French Cafe is still one of our most memorable dining experiences.

Atmosphere was amazing. I started off with the Caesar salad (made tableside - I can't find anywhere else in omaha that does this!) and an order of the scallops. I was told to try them by our server, and although I am not that big of a seafood fan, did. I was pleasantly surprised that they were not rubbery or slimy at all, but rather, they were tender and meaty, just how I think they should be. My fellow restaurant-goer got the Soup du Jour, which was a Sweet Corn and Crab chowder, very creamy and slightly sweet, and delicious. For an entree, I went with the vegetarian platter, and was amazed by the beautiful presentation of the Ratatouille crepes. He had the Chateubriand, and the presentation and flavor were perfect. We finished it off with a flambe' Bananas Foster (dinner and a show!). Everything tasted very fresh, and the servers were more than attentive. The wine list is complete without being overwhelming, and our server was very helpful in finding us a wine that paired with our food (without breaking the bank). I would definitely recommend this place to anyone going on a date, or who are in the Old Market area looking for some amazing food with a great atmosphere.

Fantastic! Great Food, Great Service, Beautiful Restaurant, a definite gem. I had the Crab Risotto to start, which was very delicate and full of flavor, and very very well presented. I then had the classic French Cafe Pepper Steak and it was the best filet I have ever had. For dessert I finished with Vanilla Mascarpone Cheesecake and it was to die for. The basil cream the came with the cheesecake was an interesting touch, and was fantastic. Overall great experience, not to mention they had an End of Bin wine list that was half off bottles of fantastic wine! I will be back every chance I get!

Way overpriced for what you get. When we arrived, we ordered red wine and our server started pouring into a white wine glass. I asked her about getting red wine glasses and she stated they were short red wine glasses. We didn't want to make a fuss so we didn't complain. However, it was kind of funny how every other table after us that order red wine...received red wine glasses. So I think we just got stuck with poor service. Some of the food we ate was good...but not even close to being worth the price. I ordered a salmon entree...and to my surprise it came with a tiny piece of salmon on top of 4 pieces of asparagus. Yeah...it seemed more like an appetizer. So my suggestion is to stay away until they get a better chef, better servers, and lower their prices.

I've only been once so far but will try again and update my review.

It seemed a nice quiet spot for dinner before a show at the Orpheum. We found the atmosphere to be fairly cozy, but they have maybe one too many tables in the dining area. The wait staff had trouble navigating around, and when they prepare a few dishes table side it got too congested.

The prices are a bit too high for the dishes served but all in all the food was good. I had a scallop and mushroom appetizer that was nothing special, but the New York strip and the fillet were brilliant. Cooked to perfection.

We'll save our pennies and try again another time.
