I visited Gonul's for the first time yesterday and it was also the first time I have ever returned a plate of food. Perhaps because it's a holiday weekend, Gonul's could only get its worst server to work. I came in with a party of 6 and there was only one other party in the restaurant, who soon left. The server was a middle-aged guy with slicked hair in a little ponytail and a bit of food in his goatee (seriously).
I ordered the Fritatta, which was described on the menu as Eggs, organic pesto, rice, Fontina cheese, mozzarella cheese and spinach. I ended up getting a dish that looked exactly like the Baked Eggs that another person in my group ordered. I've ordered many Fritatta's at other restaurants and this looked nothing like those. The waiter did not return to see how we liked our food. In fact, he never asked the entire time. So, I had to get up and ask a young man who was cutting vegetables behind a nearby counter if my dish was what I ordered. Without looking at me, he mumbled "yeah" and scoffed with a smirk. Nice.
That's when my server finally returned. I asked him if my dish was in fact the Fritatta and where, if it were, the spinach and pesto was. He went in the back and spoke to the chef. When he returned, he said I had what I ordered. I told him that it didn't look like a fritatta and he said "I'm only the messenger". Really? You're not my server who should know what my dish should look like? You're not the one who should be bending over backwards to make my experience at this restaurant at least somewhat pleasing? Nice. I took a few bites, but it tasted like polenta. I returned it. I was so angry with the way the server was condescending toward me that I won't be returning to Gonul's. He was a real jerk, never smiled and never really "served" us. Nothing about my other party's dishes were that fabulous for them to return either. Work on your customer service, Gonul!
