Holy crap the food was amazing. The presentation of the food made the experience that much better. This and Cafe Yen in pacific beach are by far my favorite affordable restaurants in San Diego.

I wrote the following review on Yelp. The manager tracked me down and wrote a reply. I will leave the entire review so the reader can come to their own conclusion:

---------

We were disappointed with the Gulf Coast Grill and will not be back. I give credit where due, the food was fantastic.

However, we had a few issues. First off, I find it very silly how the "manager" wanted to handle our drink order. We came in with a groupon that we have used at so many other resturants in this city. With all other groupons, if you visit during happy hour, it works one of two ways. When ordering a drink on happy hour, you can apply the full charge to the groupon, or you pay the discounted price on a seperate check. This was not the case! I offered to goto the bar to buy the drinks seperate, however, the "manager" just looked confused, and stuttered saying that we can't do that. Shame, as the resturant lost the sale of many drinks that we would have had that evening. They even had Abita on tap which I was looking forward to having many, but....we just had water. If it wasn't for the "manager," who believe was just the bartender (and also a little rude), we would be back again.

Second, I am glad we had a groupon. This place is a little on the high side for what you recieve and the service. It is a shame, with many of the resturants in this city, as soon as you pull out a groupon the service goes downhill. Us "grouponers" should be looked at no differently. We always tip more than normal on the full amount when using a groupon when the service is great. It took too long to get water, and then we waited again to even order. Once ordered, food came out quick and was great.

After I wrote this review, on 08/09/10 I received this Yelp compliment from the mananger:

"First of all you had a grouping which negates happy hour. Says it on the paper. Learn to read. Next I am contacting the gentleman who runs groupon and giving him your full name [T.T.] so he can take you aoff the list. You were obnoxious, rude and borderline abusive. Now you ate using a social website to disparage our reputation. Not gonna happen. I have flagged your post for removal. I have bern in the business for 21 years and have yet to come across such manners as yours. Every bartender and many restaurant workers in Hillcrest, North Park, South Park, Banker's Hill, University Heights and Normal Heights comes here for good food and libations and they will all know your name. Oh and yes I am the manager and the bartender and the owners and I have already spoken about you."

I thought the food was nothing unlike you would get basic hotel room service. The fish was strictly okay, not very well seasoned... and the veggies were again, right out of a hotel dinner plate... very dissappointed... The upside was the service was good.
