As a German (born, raised, and still being a citizen) living in the U.S. for 10 years I am always happy to hear of a place to eat out supposedly authentic German food.
When visiting last Sunday we were very excited reading over the menu and seeing some of our favorite German dishes listed. My friend stepped in first to inquire if it was ok to bring the dog into the Biergarten (as is perfectly fine and legal all over Germany). This was not the case in this supposedly authentic place.
After being seated we had a male waiter approach our table. No greetings, no introduction, no smile. We ordered out drinks and an appetizer. Originating from the southern region of Germany (Baden-Wuerttemberg) we ordered the Maultaschen and awaited with mouthwatering exhilaration the familiar culinary treat. To our disappointment the dish delivered were not authentical Maultaschen. The dough was not a Nudeldough, the shape was not the correct squarely shape, the filling was off, and the dish came in gravy (correct would be in a broth or 'geschmelzt'). It was not bad tasting for some triangularly shaped, filled pocket dish - but a clear misrepresentation of the genuine dish.
The rest of our order - Zigeunerschnitzel und Sauerbraten - left a bit to be desired as well. The meat was great: very tender and tasty! However, the Spaetzle were very greasy, which would have been ok if it had been butter. This was oil though. The cabbage looked and tasted like the stuff you can buy in the glass at Stater Bros.
But what truly made this a disappointing experience was the absolutely arrogant and unfriendly waiting staff. I'm aware that us Germans have a reputation of being rude. And yet, these allegedly rude folk felt offended by the waiter's impoliteness.
Overall, I'd suggest they proof the authenticity of their recipes a bit - Dirndl-wearing staff does NOT make a restaurant and its food genuine! Also, with probably 90% of their customers being American: don't be even ruder than the real deal....it's not giving your place of business, nor your alleged heritage a very good reputation.

Called from Chicago to request a gift certificate be mailed to my parents (who live in San Diego) for their wedding anniversary. I was told I would have to FAX a copy of my credit card and when I told them I preferred to do it over the phone so that my credit card # would not be sitting on a fax machine for God knows how long, I was told that was "too bad" and that they are not allowed to take phone orders. It really is too bad because my folks love to eat here and I knew they would love the gift of a great dinner...whoever took my call was very rude, condescending and completely unhelpful. In fact, he ended the conversation by saying, "Hey, you called me...I didn't call you".
Thanks for nothing, Kaiserhof. Rock on Hofbrau Haus.

Ok....so I write this a little warmed up by their delicious Hefeweizen! But, I am here to say the Kaiserhof has a great all around feel. If you are into good beer from the original source of beer in this world then come here!! Their Franziskaner Hefe Weizen is absolutely one of the best moments in my life when that delicious brew crosses my lips! It's bright, easy, light and thick with flavor approach is the perfect solution to a hot day in SoCal! Come in for Happy Hour Tues-Friday from 4-7 for discounts on all their beer. Come about an hour into HH and they will have delish little fried German treats for FREE as snacks while you enjoy this divine beer! The HH menu consists of a variety of veggies with ranch, chicken wings, curry spiced meatballs, french fries, potato wedges, spatzle and more! All FREE while you drink! Their dinner menu also seems very interesting to me! I am particularly interested in their Jager Snitzel dishes and some of the apps. Alas, I have only tried their HH freebies and beer so many more adventures for me here in the future. I mean I'm a healthy girl from the Midwest, I do love my comfort food and heavy dishes here and there and German food fits that bill to a T! By the way I love their little German girl and guy outfits! Reminds me of being home in Frankenmuth Michigan!! They are conveniently located right on Sunset Cliffs and W Point Loma Blvd and have their own private parking lot! Come early cuz right between 5-6 that lot will fill up!

I had mixed emotions about this restaurant and the service I received. I visited twice to ensure that I gave it a fair chance under the circumstances. The first visit was during the 2014 World Cup game (Deutschland vs. France) and so the level of service I received during this visit I tried to strike off as a product of the situation. The place was overcrowded and the employees stressed so I understood that and gave a review factoring in these elements. The second time the place was not busy at all and my buddy and I sat in the beer garden. I was disappointed really with the atmosphere, it was a half-effort at a true German beer garden. The service was friendly, but it was pretty evident that the server's friendliness was almost forced. My buddy and I ordered some of the mini-wurst (the waiter said there was no currywurst on the menu despite the fact I ordered it on the previous visit) and it took 15 minutes to receive our beers and over 30 minutes to receive a basket of fries and two mini-wursts. Overall, we spent roughly 1 hour and 5-10 minutes to get our beers, small amount of food, and subsequently our check. I was very disappointed in the level of service I received when I gave it a fair chance and the menu was lacking in more than one way. I might give it a chance if you are a first time visitor, but beware.

The first time I went here, I had no idea what I was ordering. I sat at the bar with a friend and the bartender was incredibly friendly. Talked about the different dishes, what was what, and all the beers they had available. I ended up going with the schnitzel on his recommendation and loved it. This is a great place to get some great beer, food, and a little taste of Bavaria near the beach.
