With the line out the door at the Starbuck's down on the corner, I visited this deli this morning and am happy share my experience with you, dear readers.
The fellow who greeted me from behind the counter was pleasant and friendly, and when I asked about the soup, he pointed to a list a mile long. "We have every one of these." Delighted to find Japanese Pumpkin soup, I chose that for lunch (cold, to be heated at work), and ordered an egg sandwich and coffee. While I waited for my order to come out, the fellow handed me a small, heated sample of the soup I'd ordered - and I was blown away. Delicious! Fresh, tasty and perfectly seasoned.
A fellow deli-goer and I had a chat about the excellent selection of soup, fresh cut fruit; he had ordered the Turkey Pot Pie soup for himself, inspired by the good selection.
My egg sandwich is (was) delicious; two eggs perfectly done, with sausage and cheese. Fresh roll, and the coffee was good and freshly brewed. Not a skimpy or thin breakfast sandwich (which some of the other local delis get away with...how? I have no idea.)
There is an unfortunate touch of "dinge" to the place but the building is older and the space has been used for a long time without much updating. Don't let this deter you from a visit; it may be old and dingy, but it's clean and good. The front window could use a brightening up with maybe one of those big, colorful painted window murals.
Before this morning, I have not been in this deli for over year, yet I pass it frequently. The last time here, I left with the awful cloying and clinging odor of grease trap in my clothes and hair. Major turn-off no matter where you go, and no matter how good the food. The food and service were fine, but that awful dirty air is something you literally do not loose for several hours. Gross. But, whatever they've changed to freshen the air system is working, and the food is good and well-priced. I will return here for soup and sandwich, and other treats... definitely for the soup!
