Kurama Japanese Seafood, Durham, North Carolina, Japanese Restaurant Details

Food:

I went to Kurama's for a friend's birthday and I can honestly say I will NEVER return! The service was amongst the worst I have ever experienced. Our server paid no attention to our table the entire night. When he brought our drinks, he interrupted our conversations to ask who ordered which drink (I know this server has been working there a long time so I'm not sure why he isn't able to remember a simple drink order). He made several errors with the drink order. The only redeming part of the night was our chef. He did a great job and I feel bad that his job is negatively affected by the server.

Our server paid so little attention to our table that a member of our party had to retrieve the water pitcher himself to refill his drink. We asked for coke, we got sweet tea. We asked for a sushi menu and chop stix, never received them.

At the end of our dinner, my boyfriend paid for our bill in cash and the server did the most RUDE thing ever. He counted out the cash at the table, right in front of us! As if he was implying that we would have shorted him on the bill! I have never heard of that kind of behavior! I am seriously disappointed that we had such an awful experience at such a high price. Service was worse than McDonalds but prices reflect fine dining! I will be sure to spread the word about this place and make sure no one else has to deal with this RUDE and UNACCEPTABLE service!!

Love this place so much. Whenever I go to Durham, I try to make sure I eat here. The early-bird special is a great deal for two people. You get a ton of food with it. The waiters have always been nice and usually are funny. I have always had great service here regardless as to whether or not the place is packed or if there are only a few others dining in.

I'm not into hibachi, but the sushi here is fantastic.

They have an amazing beef tataki (sliced filet mignon, lightly seared but very rare inside), which is one of my favorite dishes and not on the menu most places.

Usually I get that plus a sashimi dinner.

Worst service ever

The service was horrible. Within five minutes of us getting our food the server came over to us and asked if we wanted boxes and our check.. As we where eating..... The only real pro is that they do give quite a lot of food. But with this level of service I do not recommend you stop here.

Food:

Not very happy with the level of service, the quality of food, or the atmosphere. I had family in town and could not get anyone to decide on what they wanted so we choose to try Kurama, bad choice. The wait told to us was 30 minutes ended up being over an hour, the service was slow once we were sat, and the cook at our table was running through the motions. With other choices in Durham this will be my first and last visit to Kurama.
