La Mex, Anchorage, Alaska Restaurant Details

Food:

I really enjoy this restaurant. The service is usually good, the bartender is freaking awesome, and when you order to go your food is ready in moments. I reccommend the burrito ranchero meal :-)

Food:

Yes, La Mex on Spenard has gone downhill, but it still beats most of the Mexican restaurants in town. Don't confuse the Spenard location with any of the other locations. They might look better, but their food is not nearly as good as the La Mex on Spenard. Parking is atrocious.

Food:

Great atmosphere. The decor is nice. Service was decent. There was only one waitress for lunch so I can understand why it took her so long. The salsa is the best I've had in Alaska, but the chips were lacking that freshness you expect from a Mexican restaurant. My meal was alright. It was swimming in cheese. I had to dig through cheese to find the mushrooms and chicken. It tasted pretty good. It could have been plated better as well. All in all it was the best Mexican I've had in Anchorage but it is no where near true authentic Mexican food.

If you truly sit down and take in the atmosphere, and finger through the different items on the menu, you will find LaMex is an exception from the rest mexican restaraunts in Anchorage.

Over here the food tastes more authentic and in its own name.
The grandes are superb, and the service is great. The setting of the location is probably the best location for a eatery to be.

Go to lamex and try the pollo fundido with the layer of jalapeno cream cheese!

I had a big group dinner and we decided to go to La Mex. Three of us arrived first so we ordered 2 drinks and a cheese dip. Then 3 other friends arrived but had not ordered anything yet. While we were waiting for our other 5 friends to arrive and munching on our chips, my friend found a cigarette butt in the chips. We immediately asked to speak to the manager. The manager had the worst customer service ever. She did not even apologize! She accused us of placing the butt in the chips and told us she would not comp our tab. We paid our $18 tab, called our friends to tell them to meet us somewhere else. I have a well paying job and can afford my meals. None of us at that table even smoke! I could somewhat understand her thinking if 10 of us had eaten and had drinks and then found the cigarette butt that we were trying to get a free meal. But it was 2 drinks and an appetizer! And she couldn't even say sorry! I have told everyone I know about this horrible experience at La Mex. I will NEVER eat at this sorry excuse for a restaurant again.
