Larocca Pizza, Madison, Wisconsin, Pizza Restaurant Details

Simple, honest pizza and Sicilian dishes. Not Italian, Sicilian, with some Italian food.

I read reviews tonight and thought I would try out Larocca's pizza. I have had numerous friends who have worked in pizzerias and I have tried pizza around the world. I can honestly say that your pizza is the worst pizza I have ever had. We ordered thick crust and what we got would qualify as thin crust. Cheese slid off as soon as you picked it up. Sauce was way to salty. Toppings were sparing. Crust (usually my favorite part) was dry and bland. I take my pizza seriously and I am sad to see that my neighborhood pizzeria does not. Waste of $20.

I admit I've never eaten on premises, but we do order out from them at least once a week - I find their crust and traditional sauce quite balanced/tasty. I'm more of a minimalist w/ my pizzas (a few good quality ingredients vs. lots of dough w/ piles of toppings) but that's just me. Plus I get a sincere vibe from the place.

I went with two friends to LaRocca on Saturday night, and understandably, they were a little busy. But, a few tables were open, so we thought we might be seated right away. Wrong!

The wait staff asked if we had "reservations"...to which I queried, "You need reservations for LaRocca??" The wait person looked at me somewhat apologetic, as I got the impression he thought was kind of stupid to turn people away when tables were open.

Another table opened up as we stood there and questioned why they were taking reservations. The gave us no answers, other than to say something might open up in the next 20 minutes, or so. Since there's no bar or other seating area, we would have had to just stand there staring at people, and looking at three empty tables that apparently had be "reserved".

LaRocca is way to small to be accepting reservations. If someone were to call and ask, they should have simply said, "Sorry, but we don't take reservations, it's first come, first serve." We couldn't believe it and left extremely disappointed with what used to be our favorite pizza place. No more...we'll never go back after that.

Food:

I love this place. There are many pizza places in Madison with wonderful food, but La Rocca's is my favorite hands down. Everything is made from scratch and the classic red sauce has the best flavor I have ever had. I have had many of the items on the menu and all are excellent, but I specifically recommend the calzones and pizzas. Their salads are also full of high quality lettuce, plus the fixings. Finally, the prices are unbeatable.
