The Merc was one of the first places I started hanging out after moving to Madison a year ago. The food, though a bit pricey, is absolutely worth it. The staff are courteous and tremendously friendly, and have made it by far my first choice when looking for something to do on a quiet evening. Even if its not hopping, you'll always find good company and if its REALLY quiet, maybe you can even play some scrabble with the bartenders!
