In my opinion, there is no pizza like authentic NYC pizza. However the pizza at NYPD Pizza is as close as I've tasted anywhere outside of NY.
One look tells you that the owner is obviously Italian. I can only assume that he must have developed his pizza making skills in NY.
The interior of the shop is filled with pictures and miscellaneous mementos from NY, including posters and plaques for the NY Yankees.
The pizza is built on a thin crispy crust which is neither too soft nor burnt. It is topped with the right amount of properly seasoned sauce and the proper quantity of mozzarella cheese. Too many pizzerias smother their pizza with too much cheese (yes that is possible) but not here. Toppings of all types are available but not needed. Good pizza can stand on its own.
The only negative is that sometimes the quality of the pizza is a bit below these high standards. I can tell right away when it's not quite right. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it is a real disappointment. On these days it is just average Philadelphia pizza.
The garlic knots are also quite good. Not too much garlic and relatively huge.

We ordered a buffalo chicken pizza. It was the sloppiest pizza we had ever seen. The pizza maker opened it and said 'it will settle'. There was easily more than a pound of chicken, which isn't bad except there was so, so, so very much, very hot sauce that the only way to get it off was to scrape the pizza. We tried just letting it drip off, but the chicken was so thick it dammed the sauce. Doing this in a hotel room made it all the more a challenge. The mozzarella cheese was barely there if there was any. The crust was good. Had potential, but this cannot be the intent of the owner to have pizza made this way.

After not being filled up by some healthy sushi I decided to take the mile walk out to grab a slice, make that two, of what looked to be their three cheese one or something similar, mozzarella and other cheeses anyway. Very nice, nice crust, nice guy and not too greasy with really very good cheeses.
