We just spent a lovely week in Cape May, and our two visits to The Old Grange Restaurant largely contributed to make it so enjoyable!

We dined there on our first night in town and made it a priority to return before heading back home: the dinner menu is rather limited, due to the fact that the restaurant is truly family-run, the main team being a mother/son duo. Still, we had plenty of choices for two dinners of 2 adults and 2 children. The first night, I chose a shrimp skewer and polenta dish, which was perfectly cooked and lovely garnished with arugula salad and stuffed tomato. The polenta base was Parmesan-cheese infused and acted as a great complement to the grilled shrimp. I am from Italy and know polenta, this one was not second to any other I tried at home! My husband had a very juicy pork chop with a side of mashed potatos, as well as the stuffed tomato; and our kids feasted on a delicious grilled cheese sandwich (white cheddar) and chicken fingers and home-cut french fries. Most of the veggies used nightly come from the garden the owner tends next door. Speaking of the owners, Jake and Ro are wonderful people, who let you feel as part of their extended family! Jake welcomed us with a sample of an antipasto of their home-grown, home-made spicy green pepper slowly roasted in E.V.O.O. (so amazing that we bought a jar and ate it during our week stay in Cape May!), while Ro came out of the office to enjoy a little conversation in her native Italian with me. I rarely felt more at home than on this lovely piece of land in Cape May County... the dessert almost surpassed the rest of the meal, with a choice of fresh NJ blueberry bread pudding and a rice pudding with fresh whipped cream, one was even better than the other! The second time we went (we missed their lunch, because of our spending the day at the beach but we wished we could have tried some of their appetizing sandwiches!), I had the best chicken pot pie I've ever tried, and my husband tried the shepard's pie prepared with braised short ribs!! Everything was really fresh and tasted wholesome! Speaking again with Ro about her family run Farm to Table restaurant, I understood how the pride for well cooked healthy food was instilled in her by her dad, and how she has passed this passion both to her son, the chef, and to her husband who grows the vegetables that they use daily in their menu. On both nights we were waited on by Billie, a fun and professional young man who was also very warm with us and our children (he surprised my kids with his riddles and me with his passion about his work place!)

In all, this restaurant is a true gem, nested inside the interesting Cold Spring Living History Village, and totally worth the short trip from Cape May town! Far for the madding crowd, and into the arms of comforting good food.

On opening day a group of us went to lunch......Wow what a nice find. Huge portions, a great mix of flavors and friendly service. Tried the pickle chips, chili and the crab hush puppies as apps. All were excellent. The pickle chip was in a light crisp crusting that was flash fried and served piping hot with a ranch dip to cool the chip. The chili was meaty and smoothly spiced. The crab hush puppy had wonderful complementary flavors and cooked well. Burgers & sandwiches came with sweet potato fries starting at $6.99. Lunchmates raved about the meatloaf sandwich covered with cheese; the two fisted burger cooked to order and.....the salads were a good portion with fresh ingredients and "real blue cheese". My turkey sandwich was dressed with a delectible cranberry mayo spread on a fresh chiabatta roll.

We were inspired to return for breakfast. The Virginia omelette was stuffed with cheese, ham, onions and peppers and the chipped beef was some of the best I ever ate. Creamy, flavorful with out being too salty. Plenty of coffee and smiling service.
