Really not sure what these negative reviews are about. The food is some of the best Chinese you can get in the south. The prices are reasonable, if not inexpensive. The grocery store attached to it is one of the gems of the city. My waiter didn't make small talk, but he got my food out fast when the restaurant was crowded and was very helpful with questions. This is one of the best "off the beaten path" dining experiences in Birmingham. Treat yo' self to it the next time you want Asian food.

I have been to Red Pearl quite a few times, and am disappointed to say that since last few visits I have been experiencing inconsistent food taste. I always order almost same entree and sometimes i try new items. However, they all been getting tasteless. The last time I ordered kungpao chicken, it was served with almost cold mushrooms and no other vegetable were part of that dish. As mentioned earlier I ate kungpao chicken several times at that restaurant and I know exactly the taste and quality.
When I brought this to my server's attention he acted that he cannot understand English!!!
So when I asked him to call manager, he seemed to busy to attend my complain.
So finally I just paid the check and left even without eating.
They did not even offer apology.
Well you guys figured it out, that was my last visit.

This review covers both the Super Oriental Market and the Red Pearl Chinese restaurant housed within the same property. The market has the usual assortment of snacks, cooking supplies, kitchen gear, and fresh vegetables and meat/seafood found within most small Chinese stores. Everything is pretty packed together so navigating the aisles with other shoppers can be a bit tight. If you're looking for Asian-style bowls and glassware, they have an extensive collection for sale.

Red Pearl is one of the nicer traditional Chinese restaurants I've been to in Birmingham and is quite clearly a newer establishment. Service was prompt despite the busy Sunday lunch crowd and the waitstaff was well-versed in the menu for those unfamiliar with Asian cuisine. The Hot & Sour Soup was extremely well prepared although a little heavy-handed on the black pepper. And since it's only $4.99 for a large bowl that is enough for 4 people, it's quite a good deal. We ordered the Double Spicy Chicken, Beef with Chinese Broccoli, and Ma Po Tofu, and Pork Fried Rice Noodles to share. All of the dishes were tasty with my only complaints being the liberal usage of sauce and the disappointingly few pieces of Chinese broccoli.

We had the egg rolls, Hot and sour soup, Mongolian beef, and Kung Pao chicken. Every bit of it tasted wonderful, was hot, and good portions for the price. Our new favorite Chinese restaurant for sure.

It's a store and restaurant combo! You can find some very unique foods here. Food is not your normal American Chinese food. Better preperation with fresher ingredients create some of the best Chinese food I have had. I recommend trying something you've never had and if you want something safe I highly recommend the Mongolian Beef.
