My family and I were staying at the Marriott, which is where the restaurant is. It was our first night of our San Diego vacation, so we decided to eat somewhere close and high-end.

We ordered a lot of things. What stood out was the ahi tuna with wonton chips, the mac and cheese, the shrimp with kimchi rice, the butterfish, and the pineapple upside down cake.

The tuna used was top grade. The fish was firm and went well with the salty wonton chip. The mac and cheese was delicious, especially because of the truffle. My sister enjoyed her shrimp with kimchi rice. I'm not a fan of kimchi, but she said it wasn't strong. The butterfish was delicate and went well with the sauce it came with. It was a balance of flavors that didn't overwhelm the fish. And though the menu recommends the chocolate cake, the pineapple upside down cake was so much better! It came with candied pineapple, and the raspberry sauce had the right amount of sweetness.

Our waiter was really attentive, and the other wait staff were helpful.

You're definitely paying for the ambiance. The quality of food is high, but if you're really hungry, the portion size might not do it for you. But if you want good food and a beautiful background, Roy's will definitely hit those marks.

Totally disappointed with the food. Service was excellent. Food tasted like it was precook and preheated. Approx $300 including tips for 2-ppl, it was not worth it at all cause we had to stop at nearest pizza place starving. Better choice "Slanted Door or Butterfly" way way better. One star for food, five star for service.

I liked the the subtle and tasteful elegance of the restaurant. The lobster potstickers were delicious- flavorful even without the sauce. My coworker raved about the beef short ribs. Since I had ordered well-done, the trio of salmon, butterfish and Mahi Mahi were not as flaky as they would have been if cooked medium.  The staff was courteous without being intrusive.

Best Aloha Happy Hour Specials

I first tried Roy's in Kauai and was impressed by Hawaii fusion cooking and the amazingly fresh seafood. I continue to enjoy Roy's in NY and SF. Roy's arguably has the best Happy Hour specials in SF.

Aloha Happy Hour Must-Tries:

+ Mango mojito
+ Butter fish
+ Lobster dumplings
+ Wagyu Sliders
+ Shrimp & Pork Gyoza
+ Chocolate souffle

I don't care for chains but I'm giving Roys 4 stars because the butterfish is excellent and on your birthday they put a subtle note in the menu that is just the right amount of festive. Lots of room makes it a good place for a large group, and don't worry, if there's a non-seafood person among you, they make a great steak. Don't forget to pre-order your chocolate lava cake. If you do forget, it's still worth the wait.
