The "delicious" organic, kosher and vegan offerings (think exceptional fake meatballs) at this cute, quirky Villager may just make carnivores "believe; it's small in size and popular with the health-minded, so definitely make a reservation.

Crunchy vegan restaurant with a delightful waitress and great food, 13 Feb 2015. Ambience is more in the coffee shop vein than romantic restaurant (for which go 1 block south to Rockin Raw), and the tables have the too-small-for-your-plate feel of a Paris cafe. But the meals were delicious start to finish, and had to take half home. Vegan desserts were a huge hit with the kids (esp. brownie sundae), but I loved the tripartite entree.

I got to Sacred Chow at 5:40pm today 01/16/15 to a completely empty restaurant. When I walked in the waitress (I have not been able to get her name) asked if I had a reservation, I responded in the negative and she told me there were only 2 seats not tied to a reservation, the seat right next to the door and the other next 2 it. I paused because both seats were very close to the door and it was downright inhumane to ask anyone to sit next to a door when the temperature is in the teens, and I was the only one in the room besides the waitress. She read my expression and assured me although the room was empty, all of the individuals who made reservations would be at the restaurant by 6pm. I responded I am obviously going to choose the seat away from the door to avoid the cold, she then said, the other available seat was reserved for more than 2 persons and was referring to a seat diagonally opposite the seat next to the door. I decided to seat at the table about 3ft from the door but opted to not remove my coat because I had decided I would not stay at the restaurant because 1) The waitress decided the only place available for a black woman in an empty restaurant was closest to the door and 2) the restaurant was shabby. Roughly 5 minutes after I sat at the table, a nonblack couple walked in, the waitress asked if they had a reservation, they said no, and she said fine you can sit here, at the last table to the back of the restaurant. If I remember correctly there were 2 available seats for individuals without reservations, I was occupying one, and the other was the table to the left of the doorway. During the exchange the waitress and I made eye contact, I got up, zipped my coat, and as I was about to walk out she asked, "are you leaving," I said "Yup." She took the two glasses of water she had placed at my table and I decided to wait on my friend on the outside and a few minutes later we dined at Cafe Espanol.

Sacred Chow is a quaint vegan restaurant near NYU. The decor is modest but not in a bad way. Sacred Chow is likely what you envision a vegan restaurant looking like. The food is very good. I am not always crazy about vegan restaurants because they tend to use a lot of oil. This defeats the purpose of being healthy. I am sure Sacred Chow uses oil (hopefully not too much) but the dishes didn't seem overly oily. They offer a great selection of small dishes. There is a strong Asian influence but also a good selection of in-season vegetables like sweet potatoes. We had great paninis and three "tapas" that were on special. The food had great flavor; we had no complaints. We've added it to our list of vegan restaurants we'll frequent in NYC.

Great place to get all kinds of delicious vegan food. The black olive seitan panini is delicious and makes a great meal. Come with friends and go tapas style. Make sure you save room for dessert.

Such a great place! I got there as they were closing but the waitress Gemma was lovely as can be! She was so so helpful and attentive. Definitely coming back! Great service and I want to try all of their food!
