I ordered my food to go. I only decided to come here because I was nearby at a flea market. This was my first time here. For the "regular plate", you get pulled BBQ, baked beans, fries, and a slice of white bread. No drink comes with this offer (although I think it should have because maybe - just maybe - it would have been worth me paying $9.89 + tax). The BBQ itself is good. However, for BBQ, $9.89 for a "regular plate", you don't get much. You definitely do not get what you paid for. The Cole slaw will make you upset and disappointed (because they pile that up). I wish they piled the BBQ up as much as they pile on the tasteless Cole slaw. The fries taste like unseasoned McDonald's fries. The brownie is REALLY good: soft and moist! It's not enough to make me want to come back though. Sorry!

If I find out how to post a picture of the food I purchased, I will upload it.

I've been eating bar-b-que at Sam's for over 30 years; that should be testament enough. But for the curious, it's a simple, country bar-b-que joint with little variety on the menu but very good food at a reasonable price. Two things this type of restaurant must have: good sauce and good meat. Sam's has both. They slow cook their pork all day, and their sauce is of the tomato based sweet type. It is the best bar-b-que in Montgomery. Order the combo plate or just have the basic bar-b-que sandwich. You cannot go wrong. BUT DO NOT GO ON A SATURDAY. They always run out of meat and you will not be served.

Good local family-owned BBQ. I haven't had a lot of AL bbq (yet), but I would not be unhappy if most of it was like this. Not overly complex, and it was very satisfying. Small/simple menu, friendly service, reasonable prices. Will return. Great place for lunch.

At Sam's Bar-B-Q, they actually take time to cook the butts they serve you. All the butts that sit in the pit are slow cooked, with no spice, through out the entire day we are there. Their meat doesn't need any spice because of their one of a kind sauce. It' not hot, it's not mild. It's sweet and tangy. You can put it on anything. Their beans are NOT baked beans, they are 'Meaty Beans' simply because they put pork in the beans along with different spices after they delicately wash them by hand to make sure they are fresh. Once they are washed and prepped, they are slow cooked as well! Their slaw is the best slaw in Montgomery, Alabama! It's a mayonnaise based slaw and it's also sweet, like it should be, and they keep it fresh throughout the day. They serve regular shoe string fries because simple is perfectly fine, if you do it right. They make them hot and fresh when you walk in! As I have seen on this thread, no one has mentioned their exceptional brownies. You can't buy a brownie out of a store that tastes that sweet! As far as the workers go, they are college educated. They are picked after weeks of review and training, only then do they see them as fit to serve their customers. No complaints here, it's just good barbeque, and that's all it should be. If it's not broke, don't fix it!

I normally don't write reviews, but I've a bone to pick with Brad's review below.

He feels that Sam's Bar-B-Q should serve more meats than pork and sausage. Seriously, Bradshaw's BBQ on the other side of Gunter serves only pulled pork, not even sausage and they use the label 'BBQ'. Sam's more than deserves their name. He also feels that Sam's fare is 'nothing fancy', but he's too short-sighted to realize that 'nothing fancy' is perfectly acceptable of Bar-B-Q and that a butt doesn't need to be over-spiced with some crazy blend of rub to be amazing.

Why Brad seems to think that high schoolers working at a small Ma-and-Pa restaurant is a bad thing, I have no idea. Expecting a small, hometown hole-in-the-wall restaurant to employ only adults is discrimination and just illogical. There's only so many places for high schoolers to work and Sam's is just a good of a place as any.

His opinion of sausage is his own. Their sausage is just like any other sausage. He's nitpicking, trying to find something wrong where there's nothing wrong.

He thinks their beans are mushy. Reality check: that's how beans are when they're cooked.

I've been stationed at Gunter since 2010 and we eat out at Sam's at least once a month and I can tell you this: their pork is great, most of the fat is separated right before it goes on your plate, the sausage is delicious, and their fries are fresh, crispy, and piping hot. This is a consistent thing that's been going on for years. Having a high schooler run your cash register or separate fat from meat is not going to ruin your meal. Get off your high horse and enjoy some friggin' pig.
