Is this really a gay bar? The internet describes it as such, however, I think it is more "gay friendly" and few OUT gay or lesbian people frequent it. The history of gay bars/clubs on Staten Island is interesting. Carmine's Sandpiper was a "gay friendly" bar and lounge/restaurant in the 1960's and early 70's. In the mid 1970's it became "Club Brazil", located at 86 Mills Avenue in South Beach. The bar was located on the ground floor of a big blue wooden frame house; (Google it !) It was located on a totally residential street and was "Gay Mecca" for us gays back in the disco era of the late 1970's and early 80's. It was owned and run by two lesbians, Joann and Carole and their friend Barbara ran the bar. In later years, it became Abracadabra in the late 1980's,ran by Billy Roder and then The Sandcastle, managed by Denise Demian. This spot is truly the longest running and most famous gay bar Staten Island ever had. It existed in a far less tolerant and progressive time towards homosexuals, and was a sort of "Hide-away" for gay men and lesbians. It was very isolated, non-descript and low-key in location. I know because I loved it, and went there regularly in the 1970's, from 1977 right on until it closed in the mid 1990's under a different name. It offered a sense of comfort and safety for gays to socialize, meet, hook-up, dance, have a few drinks, watch a drag show and so on. Those days are gone now and Staten Island has no gay bar/club at present and cannot seem to get one that perseveres and lasts. Today, the "bar" is long gone, the house where it sat was knocked down to make way for a row of attached and ugly townhouses about 20 years ago.
