Cat Hair Day loves to go out on dates. Nat is vegan, so we are limited to where we can go out to, but that’s part of the fun – finding vegan-friendly places to eat in Indy. And trust us, we don’t starve! We seem to find ourselves at the Sinking Ship on a weekly basis for a couple of reasons, it is right down the street and we love their wings!

The Sinking Ship is located in SoBro at 49th and College. While it is known for being the only hockey bar in Indy, they also serve lunch and dinner, and even have a Sunday brunch. We were excited to find out on our most recent visit to the Sinking Ship, that they had just unveiled a new menu with even more vegan options!

One of the greatest perks of The Sinking Ship, is that it is one of the more vegan-friendly restaurants we have found in Indy, with nearly half of the menu options being vegan. Unlike many restaurants, where you have to “special order” non-vegan options to make them vegan, The Sinking Ship has many options that are already vegan. Vegan options at The Sinking Ship include appetizers, sides, entrees, and burgers.

Our favorite appetizers are the Sack of Balls (cinnamon sugar donut balls with a fruity sauce) and Vegan Chili Dogs. Our favorite go-to entree is their Seitan Wings with Korean BBQ; try them – we promise you won’t regret it! The Thai Seitan Salad is another delicious lunch or dinner option, and one of the healthier menu items. Their vegan sides include Mac N’ Teese and Vegan Chili. Another option worth mentioning is their variety of vegan sauces, including vegan ranch and vegan mayo. But the best day of all to visit the Sinking Ship is on Sundays when they have Vegan Biscuits and Gravy. We could eat their biscuits and gravy every week and never get tired of them. Seriously, they are so delicious!

Time to Rate

Vegan Friendly: 4/5
-almost half of the menu is vegan, including appetizers, entrees, burgers, sides, and special vegan sauces
-they just unveiled a new menu with even more vegan options than before

Tastiness: 3.5/5
-food is very hit or miss
-the hits are chart topping, you think about them when you’re at home and hungry and you then start to salivate
-misses are just okay… not inedible, just nothing to blog about

Decor: 4.5/5 (Nat); 4/5 (Amy)
-considering it’s a bar, the decorations are above average, including some pretty cool paintings on the walls
-the bar is hockey themed, which is evident in the decor
-there is a juke box, but it does not play music unless a guest has paid for songs, so it goes from being really loud for a few minutes to no music at all at times

Staff Friendliness: 5/5
-the staff is friendly and the food comes fast, so you see them often

Cost: $$
-priced well for the amount of food you get – most of the appetizers and entrees are under $10

Overall Feeling: 4/5
-we get excited about going there to get the food we love, but are wary of trying new things because they are either excellent or just ok; we never really know if we are going to like something until we try it
-we understand that it is a bar but due to the acoustics it can get loud really fast, so it can be difficult to comfortably have a conversation

Overall Rating: 4/5
-even more vegan options than before
-fast and friendly service
-very limited parking
-no bike rack nearby
-food inconsistency, with a few favorite items that we love and other options that we wouldn’t try again

A little hipster but very welcoming. The best place in town to catch a hockey game. I had the Chuck Norris burger and star tots... Yup, star tots! A great beer list. Crafts and cheap stuff.

This place has good food and a decent beer selection but the staff is the worst in town, all dropout friends of the owners. You can do drugs on the back patio or watch hockey if that's your thing. I prefer to go elsewhere. The lack of class of the people that frequent here makes it easy to pick up desperate women, which can be nice sometimes when you're drunk.

Read about this place in Nuvo when they opened and I'm really happy to have finally eaten here. Their burger options are creative and extremely delicious--everything I could ask for. The portabello mushroom appetizer was crazy good too. Best part was having the bartender tell us what was on tap and not having ever tried anything they had (I really love craft beer, so this was really impressive). We were there on the Belgian beer night, so we enjoyed some Founders, Flying Dog, and Chimay delicacies. Craig at the bar was an outstanding guy and took good care of us this evening. Will definitely come back.

The star shaped tater tots were awesome. And having a burger stuffed with corned beef and sauerkraut was amazing. Service was spectacular and our staff was super friendly.
