There fried yuca is good and relleno de papa. But alot of their main dishes are lacking flavor. The rice, beans, pork chops etc. I've been there several times.. always hoping to have a better experience since this is the only PRish place in SD. I truly dislike their empanadillas. They taste old, underseasioned, sometimes frost bitten. I don't recommend this place unless you've never had authentic Spanish food .. then you probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Impeccable service but the food was just not there. Had the Cuban which was too basic and and used low quality ingredients.

I like their Guava water based drink. Very authentic. It remind it me home. This is a mom and dad shop/store. Service is a little bit slow. Food is great. I had their Lomo Saltado, it was good.

I have tried dozens of Cuban sandwiches in San Diego throughout the years and I have yet to find one as good as the Cuban at Tropical Star. All in all it tastes exactly the way it should, and I am part Cuban so I should know! The pork is perfectly seasoned and the cheese is perfect. The only thing they could improve are the fries. They are a bit bland, but they are not supposed be the focus of the meal anyways.

I have been going to Tropical Star for the last 15 years on and off. Owners and Staff are friendly and the food is great. I like their Colombian dish with Tostones (Patacones -Green Platain), Yuca, Andean Potatoes, Arepa, Chorizo. I like their Bistec (steak with onions, home made (thin-slice) french fries). Empanadas, the South-American Andean Tropical Fruits Smoothies (either with milk or plain water) are sensational to those people with good taste buds and a very eccentric palate.
They also sell the concentration/extraction of the fruit's pulp either frozen without sugar or in containers (with sugar) and ready to mix by adding only H2O, milk, almond unsweetened (diamond milk).

I highly recommended specially if you are from any Latino American Country and are missing your mother home-cook meals.
