The decor of Tru Orleans is both its best and worst quality. It is the best because it really is inspired decor that is inviting and seems to draw people in. The bad part is that once you're there you're horribly disappointed!

Without a doubt it is the worst restaurant option on the H Street corridor. I felt that was the case the last time I decided to give it one more chance because I really do love Louisiana Creole cuisine. But of course true to form Tru Orleans delivered as expected: over priced, poorly presented, just OK food, but this time, with an attitude:

My wife ordered the Caesar salad which is clearly not Cajun cuisine, but she figured that it would be hard to screw that up (by the way she thought I was nuts for wanting to go back there again), but of course they did. While her expectation wasn't necessarily that she would receive a classically prepared Caesar, it was that she would at least get a Caesar salad of some sort , which she did not. Apparently at Tru Orleans a Caesar salad consists of green leaf lettuce some, shredded Parmesan cheese and a dollop of creamy caesar dressing out of the jar. There was no sign of any romaine lettuce anywhere nor even a crouton of which they were apparently out of. Notwithstanding the fact that a restaurant that routinely charges $20 plus for an entree doesn't have the technology to generate a crouton, what makes it worse is the fact that they still expected us to pay for the salad after she sent it back to the kitchen without touching it.

Yes, you heard me right. At Tru Orleans they try to make patrons pay for food that they return to the kitchen... Classy! When we pressed the issue with our poor waiter, he totally understood and was embarrassed to tell us that his manager refused to take it off the of the bill after asking her several times.

So to summarize, at Tru Orleans expect overpriced food of questionable quality and like it! You may as well because if you don't you will still have to pay for it anyway! If that sounds good to you, you'll enjoy Tru Orleans for sure! And the worst part about it all is that I haven't gotten to choose where we eat one time since then!

What drew me to the restaurant was the outdoor seating. They have both a patio and a balcony area upstairs. I ordered the grilled oysters which were just ok. The oysters were literally the size of a nickle, a couple were the size of a dime. The oysters were covered with melted cheese, which I don't think was on the menu so it may have been to hide the size. However, I have been advised that oysters are relatively small in our area right now, so I will give them a second chance on the grilled oysters. Also, to my surprise they had a band playing on Wednesday evening that was pretty good so I will go back. The atmosphere was laid back and there is definitely a neighborhood feel for the 'new H Street corridor'. I wish them well.

Changing this. Food is slipping and the waitress ripped me off for 73.00 on new years eve. In going over my books, which I do at least 1 or 2wice a month, I discovered that my $10.00 bill was billed at 73.00. Called the manager and came in to resolve the problem she wouldn't even come over to apologize. She sent someoen else. The refunded my money but charged me for the meal that I had when I was there. They should have given it to me for free. I had to bribe them into at least giving us the drinks for the inconvenience. Never going back.

I had the catfish rueben. While I ordered it without cheese, the first one they brought me had cheese. They apparently switched my plate with another and fixed it quickly. The place was very nice. We were seated promptly, service was quick and on-hand. Slightly overpriced but the chicken sausage gumbo and the catfish rueben tasted great. The fresh melon was actually fresh too!

Tip/Service charge included in bill for party of 3???

The category 3 Hurricane was $3 on Friday; it was tasty and not lacking on liquor. The Gator Tenders were more like Gator Nuggets but were really good. The Fertitta’s Crawfish and Crab Pistolettes were ok but would not get them again. Corn bread was unforgettable. The red beans and rice I really enjoyed, as well as the hush puppies and seasoned fries. Val’s Sauce Picante with Beef, Pork, and Sausage was served over rice and I found it to be very flavorful as did the rest of my party. It has a little spice but nowhere near overwhelming. Also tried the fried shrimp, they were good, not great. Cynthia, our waitress, was exceptional and very helpful and versed on the menu; it was clear she enjoys good food. Overall a really good experience, we will visit again with Cynthia as out waitress.
