08/18/2015 12:37 amI have tried several sushi restaurants in Reno based on online reviews, and have been consistently disappointed. Granted, I've been rather spoiled by living in places like Vancouver, BC, which is a sushi lover's paradise, but as I've managed to find great sushi in some places you wouldn't expect it, I had high hopes for the top rated places. Wasabi, on the other hand, did not have the greatest reviews on Yelp -- only 3.5 stars, so I had not planned to try it, figuring that if the higher rated places were blech, this one would be worse. Wow, was I wrong! My husband and I decided to stop into Wasabi on the spur of the moment one night, and I was immediately impressed by the gracious hostess, the nicely decorated and clean interior, and our excellent waitress. Didn't have the highest hopes for the food, but it was REALLY good. My husband ordered a beef short rib bento box, and the beef was to die for. Scrumptious marinade and wonderful grilled taste -- yum! The salad he had was nice as well, with a vinaigrette dressing that was complemented by the small pieces of fruit on top. As for me, I ordered a roll that was beautifully presented and tasty, as well as some salmon sushi. For me, sushi can only be great if the fish is fresh and soft, and the rice has the correct, subtle flavor and consistency that traditional sushi rice has. There is a special kind of vinegar used for the rice that makes all the difference in the world, but far too many places leave this critical ingredient out. Wasabi has it, and boy, did that sushi taste great! |

02/17/2012 9:09 amSo there is a Wasabi's in Carson City that is way better than this one. I don't know if they are the same owner, but this one I found was just more fancy and sit down. The one in Carson City is easily the best sushi I have ever had though. |
