Bookish types "looking for literary ghosts" make a pilgrimage to this "been-there-forever" West Village saloon (around since 1880) that's best known as the site of Dylan Thomas' last last call; "legacy" aside, it's now a nexus for "beers and bros" or joining folks from out of town at the picnic tables out front.

What's not to like - cheap drinks, great wait staff and cheese puffs! It's a classic hole in the wall and THE place to go after work for a decent happy hour.

if you're white and have a suit on you will be treated properly, however you still will pay the price $$$. if you're Spanish, Chinese, or Black, you will be treated like whatever and still pay the price $$$

I love this bar. Laid-back, cheap bears, a lady who brings around bowls of cheese poofs. Warm and cozy in the winter. No pretentiousness. Great happy hour place when it's freezing outside!

There is no reason to ever go to any other bar.

I have been to The Whitehorse countless times after work. The atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming and the beers are $4 or less - happy hour all day! Also if you are lucky someone will come around with a bowl full of cheese puffs for you.

It can get a little crowded sometimes, but there are actually three levels of bar here so if one is too busy for you just head upstairs. The after work crowds don't tend to stay long anyway so you'll find a seat if you stay for more than 1 beer.

Only downside: there is no women's restroom on the 1st floor.
