This is my favorite place for sandwiches, coffee, and work event catering. Great food, healthy, great service. Thanks!

When a craving hits me it becomes all-consuming. The morning after St. Patrick's Day all I wanted was a bagel - it was all I could think about. Unfortunately, it seems that most of the bagel places in Portland, ME close at a very early, very random hour. And that's just a suggestion (because, really, they close whenever they want to). So, I thought I'd try Bagelworks - which doesn't scream indie to intimate, but it does scream "WE HAVE BAGELS AND WE AREN'T CLOSED AT 11AM ON A WEEKEND WHEN HUNGOVER PEOPLE MOST CRAVE THEM."

The two younger women working the counter were discombobulated and frantically chaotic - and it wasn't even that busy. They couldn't figure out who's order belonged to who, they let their friends skip ahead in line, and they rang up people for the wrong things. At the cash register, I handed one of the young women my credit card to pay, but had to step out of line to get my bagel. When she went to hand the credit card back, my boyfriend reached to take it from her nd she started screaming at him. I hurried back and asked what was wrong, and she snapped "He tried to take your credit card!" "You just watched me spend twenty-five minutes in line holding his hand," I replied. "I think I can trust him to take my credit card from you and hold it while I get our food." So, he went to reach for it again, because my arms were now full of coffee and bagels and she STILL wouldn't give it to him. I put everything down on the counter, and plucked the card from her fingers. It was just ridiculous. Their snarky, self-righteous attitudes are disgusting.

On the opposite hand the Bagelworks space is actually a lot more beautiful and inviting then I realized. There's an area for chess, couches, and regular seating, along with outdoor seating when it's nice out. I really felt that the atmosphere catered to a host of generations and styles.

But most importantly: the bagel I had was freaking amazing! FREAKING AMAZING. They had vegan vegetable cream cheese! I rarely find places that have vegan cream cheese, let alone flavored ones, so I was absolutely thrilled. And the price was excellent, too (well, expect for the soy milk - they charge an extra .50 cents per coffee for a splash of it. That's a total rip off. Next time, I'll just bring my own).

Will I go back here? Definitely. Will I expect quality service? Absolutely not, but the bagels are so good I can deal with a few minutes of insufferable, entitled attitudes from the staff.

The bagel was good but the clam chowder was not that great. We also ordered a latte and a mochaccino and they were terrible, accounting for the bad review.
