Don't bother. Just don't bother. Came here today, famished after yoga. This place is a one-man band. The sushi chef does it all. Wait tables, make sushi, cashier. You name it, he does it. Hope he washes his hands... I didn't notice that. There were only 2 other people in the place when I came in at about 6:30. Seeing it from outside, something told me, "walk on by." But I didn't. I should have listened to my gut. Walked in, sushi chef greets me and motions me to a table, drops a menu in front of me. KOIT radio is playing. I look at the menu, see that Japanese plum wine is offered. When the sushi chef returned bringing me a hot tea, I asked him "what kind of umeshu do you have?", using the Japanese word for plum wine. Sushi chef looks at me like I am from another planet. I repeat myself and he still doesn't know what I'm talking about. Okay, I think. This guy is obviously not Japanese, as he doesn't even know the Japanese word for plum wine. So I finally asked him what kind of plum wine do they carry, red or white? (I wanted white). He told me that there is no such thing as white Japanese plum wine. I'm like, "Excuse me?" He kept insisting that there was no such thing as white. I asked him if he had ever been to Japan, Osaka especially, where there are a plethora of many different kinds of plum wine. Then he said, "Well, they only serve white wine in Japan. Not here in America." I'm like, "Have you ever heard of choya? I can get that at Nijiya market in Japantown." He didn't answer, and walked away. I thought that was so rude! If he didn't have white wine, he just should have SAID so and not try to give me a BS story about the non-existance of white plum wine period, and then about the non existance of white plum wine in America. I've eaten at a lot of Japanese restaurants and many of them offer the white variety! I do not have stupid written all over my forehead. I wanted to call him names in Japanese (not that he would have understood me.). Two other patrons left and I was the only patron left in the building. The chef gives me cold looks, which I return. He finally comes over to take my order, and I order the salmon teriyaki dinner with rice, salad, and miso soup. He briefly pops into the kitchen, shouts out my order, and then returns to the sushi bar. The kitchen is partially open at the bar, and to my horror I see a Mexican cook in there. Okaaaay... so much for Japanese authenticity. While I was shuddering about the non-Japaneseness of the cook, Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" comes on the radio, and the sushi chef comes back out carrying my salad and miso soup on a tray, and sets it down at my table. Then as he retreats back to the bar, decides to start singing along to Celine!! I'm like, come on, this can't be happening! Of course he sounded terrible! Thankfully he shut up after a few bars, as I'm sure my looks were piercing him to the core. The food took way longer to come out than it should have, being that I was the only person in the restaurant. Presentation was good, but the pieces of salmon were tiny tiny tiny. I did, however enjoy the mixed vegetables (Carrots, onions, and mushrooms, yay!) that were sauteed along with the salmon, but the salmon itself was bland, bland bland. I finished it all, but overall my experience there left a lot to be desired, and I made sure to express that sentiment when I tipped. There is no reason to go here for un-authentic, mediocre food. If you crave Japanese food while in North Beach, go to Sushi on North Beach Katsu instead, and you'll have a much better experience!

This restaurant has mediocre service, but for the price the food is comparable to some of the best Japanese restaurants in the city. It is a very Koreanized style of rolls and such, but with $2 Sapporo and buy one get one hot sake how could you turn that deal down. The sushi and cooked food is not the best i've had, but fresh enough to eat and for a very affordable price.

Great, fresh sushi at very reasonable prices. You may find better sushi elsewhere in the city but you won't find a better value. My favorite sushi place to go to in the city. Service is excellent too!
