Zankou Chicken, Anaheim, California Restaurant Details

Tasty food and a tried and true spot for a long time. We visit Zankou Chicken after moving out of state when we can. Make sure you ask for the garlic paste even if you don't get the Rotisserie chicken and if you want to go native get the mint yogurt drink.

I am writing this while sick, unable to taste with a grating scratch inside of my throat. This is not a good idea. I try to write about food, but I have forgotten what flavor is.

That isn't to say that the rating I am giving Zankou is based on that. No, this one was thought out before I even got sick. The reviews made this place seem promising, but it could not live up to that promise.

We came in, surrounded by insane people, and ordered our food. I got the tri-tip wrap and my lovely almost wife got the chicken wrap. Both were close to $7.00. That is overpriced. I don't pretend to know about food costs for this business intimately, but mine was some steak in a piece of pita bread with chunks of tomato and garlic sauce. It was probably the least effort that could have gone into the wrap as could be humanly conceived. I don't even know if that sentence worked out gramatically, but I sure as hell am not going to go through the trouble to figure it out.

The flavor was decent, at least on the steak. The garlic sauce was overly salty, and I say that having eaten plenty of this style of food that others complained were like a heaping bowl of salt.

Save your money and go to Genie Den instead. Or better yet, get some pita bread from Trader Joe's, whip up some garlic sauce from an online recipe and grill your own tri-tip.

I'm done here, can I have my check now?...oh right, I do this for free. Dammit.

Id heard and read so much about this place. SO when we were in the area I figured we'd have lunch. However because it was late I dont think we got the best example of chicken. It tasted nice a bit lukewarm and the white meat was totally dry. Agh. Dark meat was still good and it was mostly crispy. Sigh. Hummus, eggplant dip, falafel and radish/tomato/peppers were solid though. Guess you get in early.. 3.5 stars

My friend love Zankou's reasonable price and great taste. If you are visiting Anaheim or Disneyland, you should definitely check it out. Please also try some baklava and cookies at Sarkis Pastry next door.

MSG alert! My mouth felt bitter 1-2 hour later. If you wash it down with soda, you may not notice. If you are allergic, please stay away.

* Family meal is a great deal at $17.50. It includes 1 whole chicken, 2 large sides, pita bread, and pickles.

* Rotisserie chicken is crispy outside, tender inside, and tasted great. One newspaper voted it the best chicken. I agree, because I grew up on MSG. ;-)

* For sides: Rice and Tabbouleh (chopped salsa) are OK. Hummus (chickpeas dip) is better. Mutabbal (eggplant dip) is the best.

* The pickles are hard and sour. None of my friends like them. We usually throw them away. If Zankou is listening, please offer other options, like cole slaw or fries.

* Other Mediterranean meat plates and sandwiches are also good, but nothing spectacular that you cannot find at other restaurants.
