I love this place! The waiter Diego was so knowledgeable about wine, he picked the perfect bottle for our food. The food was amazing! The Bianco pizza scrumptious! We had the lamb for an entre and it was tasty and oh so tender. The staff was pleasant and my glass was never empty. I think this is my favorite place to go, relax and enjoy the ambiance of Little Italy. The Busalacchi family know how to treat their guests; like family!

We "stumbled on" Zia's as we strolled down India St. in San Diego's "Little Italy" looking for a couple of other recommended spots. As it was Saturday night, didn't have reservations and really wanted an outside table, we had about a half-hour wait (though we were told it would only be 15 minutes). We pulled up a couple of seats at the bar, ordered wine (beer, wine & soft drinks were available; liquor cocktails were not), and were entertained well by a jazz saxophonist/keyboardist with a very smooth voice and great range of songs from the Mancini to Clapton. We were seated on the Fir St. side of the bistro, and were immediately greeted by Diego, our waiter, who did a marvelous job suggesting entrees and wine pairings. A delightful "Insalata di Zias" - mixed greens, cherry tomato, red onion & vinaigrette dressing - preceded our entree course. My companion had Gnocchi Della Zio - a zesty pink cream sauce & shaved parmigiana over home-made gnocchis; I had an eggplant roll stuffed with mozzarella cheese & basil, baked with shaved aged parmigiana & a marinara sauce. Both were outstanding. We finished with some tiramisu cake (just a touch dry, but very flavorful) and vanilla gelato with a hint of amaretto flavoring. A "Cafe Americano" topped things off. Our very attentive waiter was backed by an equally attentive bus boy, both of whom ensured we were never in need. A $75 tab was well worth the experience, and was quite reasonable for an otherwise expensive dining city such as San Diego. An outstanding meal at a table next to a fountain, with live jazz & pop standards music in the background - I'm not sure if I could have scripted a more delightful dinner under the stars & full moon.
